An interesting article about Postnatal ecdysis, or first shed, and how hatchling king snakes choose either or moist or dry hide in relation to whether or not they have shed.
Also, skin permeability pre and post shed.
A little scientific and technical, but still understandable by the layman.

my neos like to loosen their first shed by taking a good soak in their water bowls.
that’s how my adults usually do it too.
