Have you ever had one of your snakes try to swallow your finger by mistake?

Well, it’s a good thing for you that the snake can’t get past the web between your fingers!
One time when I was swimming at the river I heard this odd "gronking" noise, like some sort of creature in distress. I swam over to the place it was coming from and discovered a big old garter snake with a big bull frog in his mouth, but he had the frog by one leg and was stymied by the frog’s crotch. When I appeared on the scene the snake got alarmed and released one very lucky bull frog. If that bull frog lived to create any progeny I wonder if the call for help got passed along.

How did you disengage the snake from your finger when she had it up to the web? Was it like one of those Chinese finger traps?

Hey how did you get my Rose? They ARE so beautiful with that red and the orange belly. But that changes. Oh yeah, and Rose has been lately, quite the chainsaw. I now use gloves to get her out. Once out she is OK.

L.Roy, I am totally envious of all your snakes eating right out of your hand like that! I fed Snakezoid (wild Cali king) last night, the usual thing of in the feeding jar with the towel over it and leave her with the pinky for a few hours. She eats but needs extreme privacy.
Are Eastern kings more relaxed and outgoing than other types of kings, or is it your gentle touch, or a combination of the two?
I don’t ever expect Snakezoid to eat out of my hand. She has come a long ways just getting used to me and not getting scared when I pick her up, or hiding when she sees me, like she did in the beginning. Next week I am getting a pair of pyros started on pinkies. I’m hoping maybe one of them will be tame enough to hand feed. I do think the type of snake matters, though. From other accounts of keepers of Eastern kings, they do seem to be a more laid back sort of snake than the shy pyros.
I read an interesting thing mentioned by Bob Applegate; he said cobra keepers would put a worn shirt of the keeper in with the cobra and the snake would associate the smell with security when it would hide under it. So I have got some cotton gloves which I will wear for a few hours (being careful not to pet any cats!) and put the gloves with my hand scent in the hides with my new snakes, like tiny little security blankies.

it’s not so much being gentle as it is being slow. snakes freak out when they see fast movements it either triggers their feeding reponse or their fleeing response.

i have kept all the major subs of commons- easterns, floridana, goini, holbrooki, nigra, nigrita, splendida and cals. easterns and goini are the best for eating in hand and cals are the worst.

some kinds of milks are difficult to train and ratsnakes are the worst of all.

WC are more difficult to train than CB.

snakes prefer to be picked up by hook than by fingers. most the time when i feed in hand i wait for the snake to start eating then i use a snake hook to take the snke out of it’s feeding enclosure.

studying live snakes requires lots of patience and i have snakes that freak out when i bring visitors over to see them and it’s because some visitors don’t know how to act around snakes.

Thanks, L.Roy! That is great information.
I have been having success picking Snakezoid up by approaching her as low to the ground as I can get my hand, then slowly covering her and enclosing her in my hand loosely. By the time she is in position to leave my hand she is into her feeding container, and can leave without a struggle to hang onto her. I don’t handle her very much but when I do I try to do everything very calmly and patiently. Snakes are a Zen thing for sure! If calis are the worst and Easterns are the best for hand feeding where do pyros fit in? I guess I should not feel so discouraged with the hand feeding wish since my snake is both wc and a cali!
I will try the snake hook thing, too, in picking her up., if that would be even less alarming. She’s not very alarmed by me anymore. She has been good practice for when I get the other snakes.
What is that golden snake you are holding? It is awesome!

the golden is a floridana,
pyros are very tricky because of their timidness and they require mucho patience but as you can see they can get used to it.
patience is the key to success and impatience is the key to failure.

That’s too bad about those 6 month hunger strikes. If mine seem to be wanting to do that I will feed them lizards. I will freeze the lizards to kill the potential parasites, but if they wont eat the ft lizards I will feed them a live one. I sure hope mine are easy feeders! At least I always have a lot of alligator lizards around. I’d have to be pretty hard pressed to feed them one of my bluebellies!
Did you try breaking their fast with lizards? It would be very ominous if they would not even eat lizards.

Yes, I have. They hatched July 16 and 17. He fed them their first live pinkies July 30. He says this is more natural for them than frozen, and I agree, but now it looks like I will have to maybe get live mice and breed them; Good Grief, I am going to have a complete food chain going here! I get these snakes about August 9, and probably wont have to feed them until August 16, so if I get right on it with a few fertile mice I should have something for them to eat in a few weeks. I was going to have him ship them to me as I wasn’t too thrilled about a long drive, but now it looks like I’d better go in person after all in case I need some pregnant mice!
I have an old motor home I can raise the mice in, to avoid really intriguing the cats and having any mousy pee smells in my cabin. Needless to say I will try ft pinkies first! and have the live ones for back up.

I sure hope so. I just really don’t want to bother with raising mice. Gak!
Silenceafable, if my new babies have any sort of decent feeding response I will be most relieved! Being as they are pyros, a shy subspecies, I am not expecting such exuberance as displayed by the Easterns, ect. Its a good thing for the keepers of those Easterns that they don’t get as big as pythons!
