Where’s a Snake When You Need One!

Last night around 3 in the morning I heard some commotion in the living room of my two room cabin. I discovered that the cats had something cornered behind the cabinets I keep my reptiles on at night. My first thought was that Snakezoid had escaped for a second time, but she was in her tank asleep, and the lizards were asleep in their tanks, too. So I removed the rolls of burlap I store behind the counter and found a very frightened field mouse! He had to come through a fenced area with at least three dozen cats, then up the front steps into the cabin where at least 9 cats sleep at night...there is just no other way this little guy could have got in. Worse yet, nobody caught him; he is still hiding somewhere in my cabin!
Since my cats have obviously fallen down on the job of rodent control, and my snake is too small to tackle this large mouse, I am regretful I don’t have a big stout gopher snake to set loose in the house! Or one of L.Roy’s beefy Eastern kings!!!
A side note: due to the severe drought in the Sierras the wildlife of all sorts has been coming in close to human habitation for water and food. I have trapped and released 6 foxes, a dozen raccoons, and a dozen skunks just since May. When the wild creatures come in the fenced yard they get relocated to the river. There are a lot more thirsty reptiles, as well. Times are hard in the woods this year.

And I would not ever have to brush the snakes! One chore I loath, but I do it anyway, is brushing the cats, as the hair always tickles my nose. The snakes shed in one neat tidy piece only occasionally not continuously and I never have to be concerned about my furniture or clothes being covered with snake scales!
Those cats had better catch that mouse tonight!

I feed them Kirkland’s dry cat food from Costco. Also I feed them cooked chicken and turkey on occasion. My partner feeds some of his favorites canned cat food, but I don’t as I can’t abide the smell; it smells worse than snake musk to me! And it makes their poop stink, which matters for the indoor cats who use a litter box.( My partner and I live in separate abodes on the same acreage, which is how we have been able to successfully live with each other for 24 years. )

Rock on, GBoF!
So do you share the 32 cats? Or are those just the ones at your abode? (Not that it would make you any less crazy, you understand!)

Hi, Weecreekers,
Our total number of cats is 39. I have 9 which are allowed into the cabin. My partner has about 7 that he allows in overnight. The rest live outside in a little heated cat barn built just for them, with bunkbeds and food. Some of them are dirty pissers so are never allowed inside! All the cats can go outside into a two acre fenced with no-climb wire fencing enclosure on our rural foothill acreage. We used to lose cats to mountain lions and coyotes but since the fence went up (a major job siting line through climax growth manzanita, I tell you what!) the rate of attrition has fallen way behind the rate of acquisition, hence so many cats. I would save the world if I could, but have had to stop intake so as to maintain proper care of what we already have.
This thing of exponential population increase seems to be moving over to the reptile field. My bluebelly eggs are looking good and will hatch soon, and my big bluebelly female is gravid again! Plus I am due to get a pair of Arizona Mountain king snake babies next week; will post pictures!
Even my crickets are busy reproducing; I’ve got several egg containers in the incubator now. It seems the only creature I am able to have only one of is my mate, Thank God!!

I’ve already gone nutz. It wasn’t a very far drive to get there, though!
What a pretty snake! Is that one of yours’? I thought you just had Easterns.
