 Bananas and mealworms

Normally they only attack things with moisture and the like. But whenever I put in the stem of a banana in there, they cling to it forever!
Anyone else have this happen? Even after its just a hard twig they’re surrounding it. And weirdly enough don’t seem to care for the mushy part of the banana...

I’ve seen it with other insects. It could be something about potassium or other chemicals, but it could alwo just be that banana peels are very, very resistant to drying out, so they stay interesting longer.
