 Turquoise Iguana

I met someone who is "selling" his female iguana. He calls it a turquoise iguana, I looked it up and the names that I’ve seen are "Blue" or "Axanthic" iguana. She is about a foot long maybe longer. I want to know if there is a difference between the green and blue iguana? I am trying to make this decision if I should buy her or just wait and get a green iguana.

It’s still like a green iguana only in the colour blue ;) Susan has one I’m sure she can provide much more info on them.

the only difference i know of is price. i paid $15 for my green $75 for my blue. people have been breeding "plain old" greens for color for a long time. the true reds (tummy and all) have been available for a while. the blues seem to have become suddenly--this season and last--more available. still a little pricey, but nothing like they were when they first showed up.

There is no difference in diet or care. It is still a green iguana. There *might* be a slight difference in temperament due to the fact that the color morphs get more TLC from the breeders than the normal greens do. (Jesse, are you finding your hatching blue morph green easier to work with than your hatchling normal green?). If this is the case, it goes towards my argument about breeding for temperament. I could get on my soapbox about that but I’ll restrain myself.

The blue phase greens used to sell for thousands of dollars. You’ll still see yearlings for that price but hatchlings can usually be found for anywhere between $150 and $500. Jesse got hers for $75 on the half price day at Petco when they had their reptile rally.

This is my boy Tazumal and hopefully Jesse will post the picture of her blue morph and her normal green together so you can see the difference.

The guy want $80 for her. But those pictures and information are very helpful. Do anyone know the difference in temperature? I’ve been trying to look up information all morning but couldn’t really find anything.

Not a difference in temperature. I said there might be a difference in temperament. In other words, some people believe that the color morphs have fewer behavior problems.

For $80 I would snatch up that iguana in a New York second.

actually, galadriel (the blue one) seems a little more fearful than elvis (the green one). which is funny, because i had to separate them because she was so dominant. here’s a cute pic of the two of them:

they still bathe together and everything; iguanas just don’t share cages.

susan’s right--$80 is a steal.

They are great animals. And 80 is nothing for a blue. The two I just picked up cost 260 with my discount. Post pics too! We love to see new babies!!

Just curious, but I know sometimes people sell greens as "blue diamond" or "blue" iguanas. Did they send pics of him first? I wish you good luck with the little guy though and can’t wait to see pics! :)

Adeline, there is a difference between a blue diamond and a "blue" or axanthic iguana. The blue diamonds are green, with a higher amount of blue on them than other greens. As adults they *sometimes* retain some of that blue and/or have blue heads. By contrast, the blue-phase greens, or axanthics (sometimes called aqua-blue or turquoise iguanas) are blue all over and have no green on them at all. And yes, everyone I’ve seen selling axanthics, at least, have sent pictures. I haven’t seen blue diamonds offered in quite some time.

The flea market here occasionally sells greens as "blue iguanas" sometimes. Not actually for blue iguanas, but just to get people’s attention I guess. They’re no more blue then regular green iguanas though. I guess they’re too lazy to put "blue diamond" (this is actually why Joanne’s iggy is named Diamond. Lol)

Interesting.

I always think of Diamond as "Diamonds are a girl’s best friend." LOL

 Turquoise Iguana

Hello Everyone,

So when I went to pick her up that Monday I had gotten into an argument with the guy because he sold her to someone else after she was promised to go home with me not only by him but by his wife as well. He tried to sell me something else, a reptile I don’t know anything about. I was extremely upset but, what was done was done. So now I have to find someone else who has iguanas.

I am so very sorry! If I had to guess he did a little research after he promised you the iguana and sold him for more money. I shouldn’t speculate, but I can’t think of any other reason.

I am so very sorry...

a guy pulled that on me with a bearded dragon once -- it made me so mad. but I just waited and the one I finally got was perfect for me.

Keep an eye on Craigslist. A lot of people bought blue babies from Petco and are now realizing iguanas are more work than they thought. There were at least 3 on the Houston Craigslist the other day
