Ok so I got an iggy today. He’s the second one I’ve had, just replaced him after 13 years.

So, he’s a bit nippy, and I figured I’d start adjusting him to being handled right away for about 5 minutes. (That’s what I did with my last one and he was docile as could be, no tail whipping, no biting ect). All went well, until I was walking him back to his enclosure, when suddenly he wiggled free, hit the floor and lost part of his tail! I know that sometimes they grow back, but my question is how long will it typically take, and what should I do to treat him? Here’s a pic.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. He seems to be in no distress, and I know it’s a defense mechanism, but should I change his name to Stump?

But will it grow back to some normal resemblance to a tail? It was quite disconcerting really

I feel sooooo bad for him. I knew if you held them by the tail it would break, but not detach from a jump to the ground!

Just about all of his whip is gone.

Well maybe that will eliminate the "whip" factor in the future.

Aw, poor little guy. It depends on the iguana really how long it takes for the tail to grow back. I got my iguana Diamond 6 years ago and his tail still doesn’t look completely back to normal. Usually, they still end up with a small stump but again, depends on the iguana.

Although one thing is, you may want to give him a bit more time to settle in before you begin to handle him. It may seem like he’s calmer when you handle him first thing, but the truth is, he’s probably so freaked out he doesn’t want to move. I’d say give him at least a week before you start trying to handle him/her.

Did you put antibiotic and bathe in nolvasan or betadine twice a day (this is what I’m finding on the web).

I did use antibiotic but only once a day since it was already partially healed when I got him. I used neosporan without painkillers and did give him his daily bath, but nothing special in it.

Also, his tail wasn’t broken that far back, but it was pretty short. It had a good 4-5" off of it.

You really don’t need to bathe him in it, just take a Q-tip and dip it in the Nolvasan or betadine and dabble it on the end of the stump...and then put the ointment on it.....You want to do this once a day....because if you do it too much you will kill the good tissue around the stump..

Thank you all for your help. Stump actually seems to be doing quite well with his handicap. It’s scabbed over and looks like it may be growing a little nub already.

Oh my! They can break their tails THAT easy?! I had no idea. I’m so afraid of this happening to my baby water dragon. He does the exact same thing. Leaps right out of your hand when youre least expecting it.

Well I hope your little dudes tail grows back healthily. The handicap makes him unique defiantly. : D
