OT--he’s so teeny!
he’s got that, "i may be little, but i’m BAD!" thing going on. and a beautiful face. the focus isn’t so much the camera’s fault--i shake so darn bad.
such pretty big, brown eyes! there’s about another inch and a half of tail behind my arm.
the last little part of it looks to have 3 or 4 built-up layers of shed, and he’s got a patchy spot on his back that looks like the same. i’ll give him a bath and put some baby oil on it. there’s no snout damage. i gently tapped his nose like tricia said to on her water dragon site, and he cooperatively opened his mouth. i wish my igs would do that when i have to syringe feed them! his mouth is all the same color of light pink, no gummy drool or spots or anything. his vent’s clean. his eyes are clear. they got him at a place called trader village, which is sort of a swap meet where you can buy animals. there are puppy mills right there, from what i’ve heard. i’ve never ventured there--my heart would break--but they’re famous for cheap pedigreed dogs, birds, reptiles and exotics (people around here are into sugar gliders). he’s in a TINY set up: 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 by 2 ft tall. he does have a nice climbing branch and a little pond. i bought him 20 pounds of river rocks (don’t you just love dollar tree?), and a light fixture. i’ll go get him a UVB later. she gave me a small fixture; she said she was keeping the bulb because they’re expensive--i hope she really had one for him. his tail is smooth and straight; so is his back. i felt all his little legs and no swelling or anything. he was freezing cold, and it was really cold in the house. if he’s always been that cold, it would certainly explain the lack of growth. she said she’s been feeding him crickets, mealworms, wax worms and some other kind of worms. he’s a pretty little guy and i think he’ll do okay; he seems reasonably healthy despite his size. i also brought home a grown slider turtle; i found him in the middle of the highway. i drove right over the bump, with my wheels on each side, before it registered what it was. i pulled over, turned on the flashers, and was running back down the road! i was so scared someone was going to run him over before i got there! i didn’t know a turtle could pull in that far! all i could see were nostrils! we’re calling him guthrie because that was the name of the street we were looking for. i haven’t decided whather to keep him. if i did, do you think he and stewie could live together? he’s in the bathtub right now (guthrie, that is). i have to go get a UVB. jesse |

What kind of turtle ...once they are held captive it is impossible to release them ...they are becoming an endangered species ...just because of this reason ... to many folks remove them from the wild ..and they can not re adapt themselves...I read this info somewhere pertaining to native turtles in the mid eastern states...if there is such a thing. the Carolina’s and what not ...If the turtle has salmonella the whole tribe could get it ....quarantine please. They will not do well together unless you give the bottom enough length for the turtle and the height enough for the lizard ...kinda like a micro envionment ...but then you will need 2 UVB’s one lo and 1 hi. And the WD will be pooping in the water too. I dunno ...Annie has done weirder things ..LOL Cp Cp |

second, leave poor annie alone. she cant help it she needs a Reptiles Anoymous session (or more than one) lol and turtles are cute but not my thing. did you get any pictures of him before you let him go? ok back to the water dragon. lol. i cant believe hes so small for his age. a 3 yr old male should be big and bulky. poor guy. but you know what your doing, you will get him straight. haha and i love the name. stewie!!! any relation to family guy? lol |

he came out of his house today to explore. he ate three mealworms and a few bits of iggy salad; i can’t tell if he tried the watermelon. i bought some nightcrawlers today, but they’re huge. but water dragons can chew, right? so stewie can just eat them in bites? if i have to chop them up for him, i’ll make jim do it. annie says i can feed him chicken if i give him good calcium supplements. here he is sitting on top of his little house, soaking up rays from his UVB:
i did take a pic of guthrie before i let him go. he’s a little camera (and everything else) shy:
i’m not sure what turtle happiness looks like, but i think he achieved it as he swam away. |

I used to get earthworms right out of the soil ... they are actually red wigglers...but what’s in a name..I laced them through the jaws like a spaghetti string and pulled it back to the jaw hinge ...Buddy chewed em right up they are an excellent source of protien...but they too can have parasites ...so best to have some parazap on hand if you know what that is. I like the way the turtle looks like he is puckering up for a kiss goodbye ....good job Jesse. Chris |

i was trying to remember the name of that stuff--parazap. i knew there was something the forum folks used. these are captive-bred nightcrawlers, so i imagine they’re fine. i won’t load him up on the mealies, anyway; i want him to have variety. i was reading up on breeding crickets. it sounds easy enough. i cannot possibly deliberately bring more roaches into the world. those things creep me out BAD--i’ll scream like a girl! and i like chirping. i’m considering getting some good, sterile soil and raising myself some worms. i don’t want to get them out of the ground, because they’re good for the garden. i did look through the poo stewie left earlier; didn’t see anything squiggly-looking. i was a little sad to let go of the turtle, but he’s better off. he’ll have a great story to tell his grand-turtles, lol! |

but crickets/mealies are so hard on the digestive system. if you can do the parazap water stuff, you can feed more exotic foods. like the silkworms, rosy minnows, the red wigglers, hornworms, butter worms, and the roaches. if you can find some phoneix worms, give a few to your little guy every day. they are very high in calcium. when i first brought Ru home, i gave him 3 or 4 every time he ate. almost like vitamins. lol. but if you can put up with the roaches for a few, you can order smaller roaches (nymphs) from double d’s roaches. you get 100 for 35$ (includes shipping). put them in a container. keep them warm. feed them ground up cat food and cricket water gel. you can use tweezers to pick them up. if it makes you feel any better, take some vaseline/petroleum jelly and smear it around the top edges of the container. they cant climb anyways, but it provides peace of mine. lol. roaches are very good. also see if you can get him to eat new born pinkies. you may want to feed the pinkies live (because they move) until he gets used to eating them or switches to fuzzies/hoppers. pinkies are fine to feed live because they cant bite or claw. but welcome to the world of feeding live prey/bugs! lol. wernt you the one who swore you would never feed anything bugs? lol |

i was reading a couple of annie’s breeding posts...i want to feed him things that are good for him but won’t give mommy nightmares. and roaches freak me out. not in the house, not on purpose, nope, nope, nope! maybe i’ll raise earthworms. you can do that outside and put the extras in the garden. they’re high calcium and high protein both, and easy to digest, and i can touch them. might be a do-able compromise. |
