 Help please I’m freaking out!!!

Hi! I Have Had boosie for at least a year now and he is still very lively and still untamed. i looked over and saw that he was not on his basking branch and found him buried under the artificial moss in his habitat! Iwent to pet him and he didn’t react at all. After crying and gathering myself(i thought he was dead),I finally got him to move around by misting him with a warm water bottle . is this normal or is this a symptom of an Illness. this is my first Iggy and i am afraid that I am Not being a good Iggy parent

Hello,

I would try to give your iguana a warm bath. See how it reacts to that. In the mean time it would beneficial for us to help you if you can provide some background care information such as diet, supplements (such as calcium and vitamins) , basking and ambient temps, substrates, etc.

Hello,

I personally do not use a substrate for my iguana. Iguanas are known to eat things they shouldn’t...including substrates. I think there is a photo around that was posted with a selection of different objects cut out of an iguanas stomach. It consisted of rocks, glass, money, etc. I would personally remove that.

You should be giving your iguana a calcium supplement and it should have a good UVB bulb to help your iguana produce the vitamin D3 needed to absorb the calcium. You may also want to supplement once a week with vitamins. This can be dependent on the size of your iguana, how much your iguana eats, plus the variety of foods given. RZ is actually working on a database of common foods, their values, and a few other helpful details so you can see what your iguana is actually getting from it’s diet. Actually this feature has been sitting in hiding for about a year now.

You haven’t mentioned temps and what kind of lighting you are currently providing. Are you providing a water dish and giving your iguana baths?

I agree about removing the substrate. I just use newspapers on the lower level with his potty box. It could be your iggy just wants some alone time--too much tv???---take a shoe box and cut a tunnel hole in the small ends and put it in the back of the cage away from the heat lamps, but still where it would be in a warm atmosphere. iggy should like this. My iggy, who is old now at 13 still likes his ’sleepy tent’ (a bigger box) where he sleeps at night. so cute with his head and tail poking out both ends!
anyway. try that.
If you have done something new to the room he’s in, then he is stressing over the change. new animals are the biggest stressors. Try a soothing radio channel on low, or the animal channel on tv--if not a scary show. My iggy likes the food channel as he thinks they are talking (looking) at him! so cute!
hope any of this helps.

He doesn’t sound good....He might be very dehydrated and possibly impacted (plugged up) from eating something maybe even some of the substrate..

We do need just a little more info so we can try and help

When was the last time he ate?

What are your temps and humidity levels?

What are you using for heat?

What are you using for lighting? Do you have a UVB bulb? What kind is it?

What size is your enclosure?
