I know there are a lot of recipes for iggy salads out there so I thought I would share my recipe on how I make my iggy salad for my crew.... It’s not only for iggys, you can also feed it to your Bearded Dragons, Water Dragons, Frilled Dragons, Mountain Horned Dragons, Basilisks, etc...Well any of your veggie eating reptiles....Ha I have to laugh out of all the lizards I named the only ones I don’t have yet is a Frilled Dragon & Basilisk..real soon I will have them...LOL....But everyone in my house eats their salad & greens everyday..... Things you will need: Food Processor Big bowl Food Saver Bags (Only if you have a Food Saver machine) or Zip Lock Freezer Bags 1 bag of green beans 2 or 3 parsnips (depending how big they are) 1 acorn squash ( or other type of squashes) High quality rabbit pellets or Alfalfa tablets Ok I first start off with a bag of fresh green beans
I wash and cut off the ends where the stems were...
Then I cut them up and put them in the food processor and chop them up...but don’t do it for long because if you leave it on for too long...they turn to mush.....
Then I put on the shredding disc to do the parsnips & acorn squash.. Wash and clean the parsnips real good and the cut off both ends..
Cut them up into chunks and put them in the processor..When your done they will look like white cheese..LOL.. add to the green beans and mix by hand...
Next is the Acorn squash.....Now I read that what some people do is peel the squash and feed the rind to their igs...but what I do is clean and cut off the ends and then cut the squash in half, clean out the seeds...and then cut it up into chunks to fit in the processor.
Hehe...Looks like Cheddar Cheese...
Then add it to the parsnips & gr. beans and hand mix it up. And here’s your Iggy Salad...........
Now to store it.....I put some salad in a bag, and then I vacuum seal it....I kinda make them into loaves..Do the same with a zip lock freezer bag and just roll the extra air out...
Makes about 4 loaves and just put it all in the freezer....
When you need a loaf..take one out and defrost it in the micro or just let it sit out to defrost (in the bag).....After it’s defrosted put it into a bowl with paper towels..Sometimes after you defrost it there is alot of moisture in it...so just soak it up with the paper towels...
Now for the Alfalfa...I find the easiest thing to do is put the pellets in a coffee grinder or blender and make a powder out of them...and store the powder in a container....
OK back to the salad....put it in a bowl and add a scoop of alfalfa (about 3 big table spoons)
mix it up and it’s ready
For the greens I use Collard, Mustard, Turnip....I will confess and say I do feed my iggys some lettuce to add water content to their diet.....I mix the lettuce with the greens and then I add the ig salad..
For the Vitamins I use Rep-Cal Herptivite Multivitamin
And Rep-Cal Calcium with Vitamin D3 Phosphorous - Free Ultrafine powder
What I do is mix about 2 tablespoons of Herptivite and 1 tablespoon of the Calcium ( I only use 1 tablespoon of Calcium because there is all ready some calcium in the Herptivite) and put it in a salt shaker and shake it up and put a few dashes of vitamins on the salad and mist the salad with water...I give them vitamins twice a week... Yummy Yummy it’s ready to eat...Now if you want to add fruit just cut it up and mix it in with the salad...
Now for an extra tip...All the ends that you cut off don’t throw them away....
If you happen to raise your own bugs (for your other lizards....NOT IGGYS)..Take the ends and feed them to the bugs...They love them and this way your bugs are good and gut loaded and there is NO wasting of food.....LOL..I tell you nothing goes to waste in this house..What the lizards don’t eat...the bugs and rats & mice & hamsters eat... Well I think that’s about it...If you have any questions Please feel free to just ask..... Thanks.... Annie....>^..^< |

i have a proccesser but its all by hand so im going to think about getting a good food proccesser becuase the way i work i think making all the food like that at once and then just being able to pull it out would be so much help for me. Annie could you maybe post a picture of the rabbit pellets you get ? when ever i go to the store i can never find any and i would like to order it. , |

I completely hate my food processor...and threw out my Food Saver. I like those jars you have. Where did you get them? Nice presentation on the iguana salad. I am not a big fan of some of the diets out there. A lot of their information are wrong. I have brought it to some of these sites attention, but they do not want to acknowledge any of it. I feed lettuce as well. It is true iceberg lettuce does not have much nutrients, but I think it’s bad rap comes from the people that have fed lettuce exclusively back in the days where we had few selections of vitamins and calcium, as well as lack of an abundance of information like we receive today. Unfortunately another lettuce, Romaine Lettuce, has taken a bad rap as well. It is a nutritious green. I eat it every day since I am a health and fitness freak. If it didn’t have any nutrients bodybuilders would not waste there time eating it. I have to admit I am not a big vitamin supplement fan if feeding reptiles a varied diet. I can see vitamins once a week. Vitamin B and C can be given more often since they are water soluble. Vitamin C also aids in calcium absorption, gum health, etc. Vitamin B is great for energy, appetite, and stress. I no longer use reptile calcium powder since most are calcium bicarbonate, which has a low digestion rate, but is so popular because it is cheap. Calcium citrate seems to be a more easily absorbed calcium and is a bit on the more expensive side. And just for a little extra info...do you know what the iguanas I see at work eat? They graze the lawns eating grass. I have even seen one eating seeds fallen from a nearby tree. These are some of the healthiest iguanas I have ever seen. I know I have photos of them grazing somewhere on one of my computers. PE |
