 How to fatten him/her up

HI my baby igg is very tiny and skinny, Iknow it’s only young but I was wondering if there was a particular food which was good for him/her and would fatten up his skinny little belly a bit.
He/she’s eating greens and I’m giving it small pieces of pear . Any advice would be great please. Thanks x

Hello,

Welcome to the forum.Feeding a good diet is about all you can do. Please read up on the staple foods for Iguanas in which Pear is NOT one of them. Fruit should be fed very little.
What types of greens are you feeding?
Any veggies such as squashes, green beans, parsnips??

Check out Pocochu’s post on her Iggy salad.

Good luck

Toni~

Hi I know pear is not a staple food I just wanted to make sure he had something in his belly.
I’m feeding him finely chopped pak choi, tatsoi, chard and mustard greens I’ve also tried him with peppers and peas in the pod {garden peas}. He’s very young and the person in the pet shop said not to expect him to eat much for the first few days He’s eating but only tiny amounts about a pinch of greens . I’ve looked at pocochu’s salad it looks good enough to eat lol

Just be careful with the fruit. It can give him the runs if you are feeding too much.

You need to let him be for a few weeks. He has to acclimate.Put fresh food and water and pretty much let him get used to things without your constant interaction.

I’d replace that pak choi, tatsoi and chard with collard greens and dandelion.Make sure the pieces are no larger than his head.Do not feed any large hard stems.
Add in some squashes as most of them love them.

Good luck!

They are a big crisp dark green leaf on a thick stem. Check when you go into the markets.A tad similiar looking I think to swiss chard which by the way that one is a no no. Try to find dandelion greens,watercress,arugula...if you cannot find that. The mustard greens are good though.Just good in my opinion anyway to mix it all up a bit.

Again, good luck with everything and with your new little baby.

Do you have him set up in an enclosure properly?

We are all here to help :)

When he gets bigger I’m gonna turn the enclosure on it’s end and add to it as he grows . He isn’t my first reptile I have a pair of water dragons . Here’s a pic of his enclosure for now .. Thanks again for the advice I’ll go shopping tomorrow [ yippee] Any excuse for a shopping expedition lol

To the op.

Really your iggy should start eating a ton once she is comfortable in her surroundings. Iguanas are pigs! They eat a lot for their size thats probably why they grow so fast. You gotta be careful though cause iguanas will eat just about anything. Pizza, chicken, popcorn so don’t leave your hungry and unsupervised around people food haha.

 How to fatten him/her up

Hello. Im Ron. Nice too meet you. I once had a super skinny iguana too. I was trying to find ways to fatten him up and i finally found one that works and its healthy. Instead of giving small portions of fruit everyday. Every OTHER day i feed him a separate bowl of fresh cut fruits. HES LOVES IT! It prolly took a month to get him to his fatty self. Here is a Before and After of KING.

BEFORE

AFTER

Hope that idea helps your iguana too!

Hi sorry to hear you’ve been unwell. Oliver’s looking loads better you’ve done a really good job with him
Yesterday I went and got the correct veg for my baby. I came home and blended a mixture of
butternut squash
Parsnip
Greens he didn’t even try it so then I blended
peas
beans
greens he didn’t even try it and I tried a combination of all sorts and all separately .

I’m getting worried now coz he’s eaten so little. He’s drinking and pooing he just seems to sleep all the time . How much should he be eating at his size he’s about 3 inches shout to vent .

Hello MM,

Glad to hear that you went out and got him the good stuff. How long have you had him? Our Sam is 2 years old and is such a small eater.
What are the temps and humidity of the little one’s enclosure? Have you taken him for a vet check up? Good that he is pooing so obviously he is eating. I am used to mine being a wild child so it does alarm me a bit when someone says that theirs seems to be sleeping a lot.

 How to fatten him/her up

Hi well I have had him for a 8 days . I’ve now put a sheet over the front of his Viv as I think he might have been being scared by everyone walking past and I’ve peeked through the side and he’s been moving around a bit today. the only time he See’s me is when I change his food and water and spray him. I put some food near him earlier and he climbed up my arm so I had a quick check of him and put him straight back .
When I spray him he seems really thirsty almost frantically trying to get water I think may be this is the key and he’s a bit de-hydrated so I’ll give him plenty of water and spray him lots ,but he is seeming better today I think I may be a bit over protective . lol
The temps are 95 hot end and 75 cool end but he has a hide on the floor so that will be cooler again the humidity is 60%

Hi MM,

Just give him time to acclimate. You are doing all the right things for him so all should work out just fine. Just make sure to keep fresh food and water and do as you are doing. If you see him active then of course that is a good thing. An inactive Iggy would have me rushing to the vet.

I wish you all the best
Have a lovely day

Tone~

And "mums " are supposed to be overprotective trust me on that one hehe

Kale on occasion and no on carrot. At least in my opinion I would never feed Sam carrot. I stick to the squashes, parsnip and green beans (rare as he does not like them) for his veggies,

Greens I stick to collards, dandelion, watercress, arugula and mustard and turnip IF I can get a hold of the latter two.

Tone~
