 Egg shell as calcium??

Well there is this guy that uses the egg shell as calcium for his green iguana and well I’ve heard of this but not for green igs, so is there really animal protein in the egg shell or not?.

Thanks.

 Egg shell as calcium??

Well I did all the research I could do and what I came up with is

Quote:

What are egg shells made of?

The main ingredient in eggshells is calcium carbonate (the same brittle white stuff that chalk, limestone, cave stalactites, sea shells, coral, and pearls are made of). The shell itself is about 95% CaCO3 (which is also the main ingredient in sea shells). The remaining 5% includes calcium phosphate and magnesium carbonate and soluble and insoluble proteins.

My biggest question was egg shells have protein...but what kind of protein

Quote:

protein.
A complex polymer made by linking together amino acid molecules. Proteins sometimes contain non-amino acid components such as metal ions or porphyrin rings embedded within.

I really couldn’t find what kind of protein...so I have come to my own conclusion that the protein in egg shells are animal protein since the egg it self came from an animal....where as if it came from a plant it would have plant proteins...

So just to be on the safe side I wouldn’t give it to my iggy...........

Please if any one else has separate opinion please post it......

Hey Dany, Annie is correct about the protein and make up. Egg shell is used for birds that can digest and require the grit, but aside from the nutritional value the sedintary can build up in the gut like sand and cause blockage. there are reptiles that feed almost exclusively on eggs but it appears our GI’s aren’t able to complete the digestion.

just thought I would throw that little tidbit in just in case some one decided that it may be a good source of protein or calcium.

Kimberly
