Quote: What are egg shells made of?
The main ingredient in eggshells is calcium carbonate (the same brittle white stuff that chalk, limestone, cave stalactites, sea shells, coral, and pearls are made of). The shell itself is about 95% CaCO3 (which is also the main ingredient in sea shells). The remaining 5% includes calcium phosphate and magnesium carbonate and soluble and insoluble proteins. My biggest question was egg shells have protein...but what kind of protein Quote: protein.
A complex polymer made by linking together amino acid molecules. Proteins sometimes contain non-amino acid components such as metal ions or porphyrin rings embedded within. I really couldn’t find what kind of protein...so I have come to my own conclusion that the protein in egg shells are animal protein since the egg it self came from an animal....where as if it came from a plant it would have plant proteins... So just to be on the safe side I wouldn’t give it to my iggy........... Please if any one else has separate opinion please post it...... |

just thought I would throw that little tidbit in just in case some one decided that it may be a good source of protein or calcium. Kimberly |
