 Fostered iggy not eating

Hi All,

I’ve adopted an iggy from our zoo. They named him Cujo because of his disposition lol. I’ve changed his name to Buddy :). I’ve had him a week today and he isn’t eating much. The keeper said he had an excellent appetite and I’m feeding him what they fed him, mustard greens, butternut and acorn squash, parsnips collards etc. He hasn’t used the bathroom since I brought him home either. I’ve tried to let him acclimate to me and have tried not to handle him too much and basically have just fed him and gave him clean water. He did eat today when I fed him but not much and he will only eat when noone is in the room with him. I’m more concerned with him not using the bathroom as I figure he will eat when he gets hungry enough. I’ve tried soaking him and misting him and I did take him outside for a bit but no bathroom. Any suggestions. He’s not people friendly so everytime I handle him I get the whole tail whipping, alligator rolling, hissing, scratching routine. But we are making progress he actually did eat a piece of mustard green from my hand without trying to eat my hand lol. Thanks for any and all help.

I doubt if I will or can be of much help here but probably just the stress of being somewhere new. Give him time. I am going through this now with Sam in his new enclosure. He is neither eating nor defecating obviously and is showing some signs of being a little dehydrated as well so I am misting him like crazy since I cannot bathe him as he freaks. He also goes into frantic digging modes.

I do pray that tomorrow is a better day for Buddy.

Take care,
Tone~

I hope so too. He will soak in the tub but he freaks out when you lift him out. He did eat a little tonite but I had to hold the plate in the air in front of him while he laid on his pillow. When he was at the zoo he ate out of one of those bowls that are kind of deep and high that looks like rock, you know what I mean, while he laid on a branch. I’m feeding him on a plate do you think that could be a problem, I could buy him a bowl that is higher in the air than a plate. Well there’s always tomorrow

you could try replicating some of his things IF possible but I really think it is just the entire change. Iguanas do not care for change and look at what your guy has come from. Maybe try rigging something up so that he will eat and hopefully he will come around.

Mine is in the same room just a whole new enclosure and he is not faring to it well though it is an enchantment compared to what he was in before.

Keep us updated hon and all the best of luck with him.

Ours does not like being handled and the thought of taking her to the bathroom for soaks terrorizes me enough. What we found at pet smart works great for her soak dish. They have a large hard plastic dog litter box for those that train their dogs to use them.
She can beat it up all she wants and it will not break.
Also you can get it deep enough that she rests on her stomach and it is up to her neck. She will only defecate in that now. It took our girl a week to really adjust to us and eat with us around or defecate.

Hi Cindy,

He could still be acclimating..Some iggys take longer than other...I know my red iggy Abby is still acclimating, doesn’t eat a whole lot, still scared and jumpy..but she’s coming around just slowly....So I’d just give him some more time...If you want you can give him a few drops of mineral oil..if you think he might be plugged a little...it won’t hurt him.

Hi Annie

He decided today was the day to eat and boy did he eat. 4 plates of greens and one of greens, squash and parsnip mix. Since something finally when in besides little bits here and there I’m guessing something will probably be coming out tomorrow lol. I would try to give a few drops of mineral oil, I know it won’t hut him, but doing it will probably hurt me lol. I’ve been tail whipped and hissed at more in the last week than the whole 2 1/2 yrs we had Igloo. But he did eat from my hand today and when he was done he looked up at me and head bobbed a little bit like hey give me more lol. And he let me move him back from his plate so I could put more food on it, so I’m hoping he is beginning to associate me with food and back rubs and will eventually not spazz out every time I pick him up. I know that you aren’t supposed to pick them up from above, but until he tames down a little I’m not going anywhere near his mouth when I’m trying to pick him up. I don’t like needles or stitches so I’m in self preservation mode handling him.
