This is making me cry... Ig looking for a home...

eight years ago a guy I knew told me that he had a Iguana that he couldn’t keep, being a total NOOB I had no idea what to expect but I was intrigued so I went to take a look. I was pretty outraged when I saw her, she was about 18" (SVL) and he had her jammed in a 15 gallon aquarium! Her diet consisted entirely of frozen cut broccoli and they only took her out when she had fouled her "cage" more than once... My first instinct was to totally kick this guys smarty pants! {easy... count to ten...} anyway, without a moments thought I took the Iguana home...

"Honey?, Ev?, Are you home?, huh? What is this? Well... Um, it’s an Iguana, and it needed rescuing and it just looked so sad and i just couldn’t leave it in that... place. Can I keep it? Please?"

"Karmann" soon turned into a loved member of our family and after a crash course in Iguana lore we started to figure out what we had gotten ourselves into. As you can see from the pictures, Karmann has her own "lizard lounge" that she likes to hide out in but she also loves to free roam the house and totally intimidate the cats...

Cat 1: "hey man, have you seen that new cat?"
Cat 2: "You mean that weird looking green one?"
Cat 1: "Hell yeah, what do you think happened her fur?"
Cat3: "Beat’s the hell out of me but stay clear of her tail!"

All too soon we found out the meaning of "Gravid" and "total psycho". After some intense study we decided that we would have Karmann neutered (spayed). After a month or so she recovered and her mood has been great, well... as good as can be expected for an Iguana anyway.

Karmann has since turned intop quite the traveler moving with us from Oklahoma to Texas and finally to Maryland. We have also lake a few other long trips and she travels well. (it’s always good for a laugh when the hotel maid comes in to clean and gets a look at our "alligator"

Here’s the sad part. After a 20 year run in the US Army, Ev and I have decided to retire and move on to another career. I’ve been offered a position with a firm that works out of various foreign countries mostly in the middle east. I initially put the offer on hold because I knew I just wouldn’t be able to properly care for Karmann over seas. After a lot of deep thought, we decided we couldn’t turn the job down and that we would have to find a new home for her.

  • What we’re looking for is an EXPERIENCED iguana owner! I mean no offense to the new Iguana enthusiast but Karmann has already had one bad home experience and she’s already had to teach us everyting we know about IGs, what she needs is someone who already knows what she needs.

  • Karmann and her lizard lounge will be free to the right person / people.

  • Best guess is that Karmann is 8-10 years old.

  • She is about 48-50 inches (STL)

  • Karmann is in good health and is used to a daily diet of mustard Greens and or collard Greens, Green beans, (she LOVES wax beans and usually tries to eat the can before you can open it!) for an occasional treat she enjoys strawberries and Kiwi. Beleive it or not she knows what a dominos pizza box looks like and will promptly attack to get a bit of crust...

  • Karmann was spayed in 2002 and has made a full recovery from the procedure.

  • The "Lizzard Lounge" is 30" x 9’ x 7’. It was built in sections and is connected by screws and threaded inserts so it can be taken apart and moved. All of the panels (sides, back and top) are made with 1/8" panneling lined with 1" foam core bord for insulation. The doors are 1/4 inch tempered safety glass (VERY HEAVY). There are two horizontal and one diaganal perches. The bottom of the cage holds a large "pond" that karmann is trained to use. Cleanup is a snap, under the pond, there is a built in hose attached to a suction pump. Just roll out the hose, drop the end in the nearest toilet and flip the switch. There is a 48" UV lamp at the top of the cage and one 250 watt ceramic heat lamp at the middle. There is a built in misting system that keeps the humidity up but I havn’t had to use it lately here in Maryland.

  • I will not ship Karmann, please don’t ask. We live on the east coast close to Aberdeen Maryland, Karmann will have to be picked up.

  • If you are interested, post a reply here.

    Hey Dood! What’s up?

    This bed is MINE!!

    Hey, what’s that out there?

This is my Mom, she spoils me rotten...

    {sigh} it’s a rough life...

a heat lamp and a place to hang out, what more could anyone want?

    the Lizard Lounge

Come on Mom, let me down, pleeeeease!

    a walk in the park

Look at me - look at me!

all of the wall panels are lined with 1" foam core board for insulation.

everything is assembled with threaded inserts designed to come apart

Cleanup is a snap, just roll out the hose, drop the end in the nearest toilet and flip the switch!

This made me cry!! She is absolutely beautiful and it is apparent that she has a wonderful home there with you. I wish that I had the room along with being able to afford her.

I truly pray that you find her a loving home.

My very best to you all

She’s adorable.I would love to take her but unfortunately, I don’t live anywhere near Maryland and I live in a 2 bedroom apt, and I already have two of my own.My mom would probably kill me if I added another spoiled iggy. :)

My 14 year old Emma is dying of cancer and I would truly looovvvee to take care of your baby! But, alas, I live in Ohio. Emma is as big as yours and also spoiled rotten! She is a free roamer (but she hardly moves off her stand) and potties on newspaper. I can relate to the Dominoe Pizza box - if I try to eat a sandwich in front of her, she just about lunges off her stand! I hope you can find a fantastic family for her. She has many more years to give!

I’m so sorry to hear that sad news.

When most folks see an Iguana all they see is a "big honkin lizard" or something "so scary" they would never get too close to it. It doesn’t take very long though to see that IGs are smart and inquiaitive animals that truly become a part of our lives just as a dog or cat would.

    You have my deepest sympathies.

Do you think that the lizard lounge could be adapated to a smaller size, say about 7 feet across? And do you have a UHaul center close by. I am seriously considering takeing that road trip. She is so pretty. I am 57 and have had Emma for about 10 years, so I know IGs, at least my little girl. I’m afraid that I am going to have to put her down, due to the fact that she has developed more tumors in her mouth and her eye is starting to bleed from the cancer in her sinuses. She stills eats good, but it is getting more difficult every day. My computer room has a 7 foot wall and that is where I would want her. Close to my daily activities - eBay, TV watching, reading, etc. Does she like to roam or just hang out?

well, anything is possible, but it would be a MAJOR undertaking and in all probability the lounge would be destroyed during the adaptation. Rather I would suggets placing it somewhere else in the house and taking her out daily to hang with you in your computer room.

She does like to free roam the house sometimes but generally we’ll put her in a sunbeam and she’s "locked" to the spot. She also loves our waterbed because it’s warm I guess and there is a large mirror next to it. She’ll lay on the bed, head bob and puff up to impress the "other" Iguana in the mirror for hours... =^)

We’ve taken her on several long road trips, Oklahoma to Texas, texas to Washington state and back and texas to Maryland. (gotta love the Army, we’ve been all over!) She does travel well, usually she’ll sit on the top of the back seat and enjoy the sun and sights passing by.

    JESSE-

You should take her, the drive would not be so bad. We are in Maine and hubby was considering doing the trip. From here it is about 9 hours. And you would be such a good parent to her, Emma would want you to have another. I took in a Maine coon cat that no one wanted b/c he ws 14 yrs old. 3 weeks later my 11 yr old cat had to be put down for system failure. If I did not have Recess around, my heart would have taken even longer to recover. It was like "whoever up there" knew that I would need another to care for and keep me busy. Please think about it. Just one mommy to another darling.
    Love,

Great Photos, recess looks like just the thing to keep you warm on those cold main nights! My condolences on the loss of Velcro, I’ve had a house full of cats as far back as I can remember and the little buggers always end up... well "leaving" and breaking our hearts. And yet we always adopt more.

Emma has tolerated our cats. Now that they are not kittens, she bobs and shakes her head at them, defending her space. Here she is when it was okay to let them on her stand

Pretty babies! Karmann pretty much rules the roost here, the cats were curious at first and Nick actually stalked her for a few minutes but one good tail sweep and none of them wanted anyting to do with her after that. They pretty much co-exist now but stay out of each others way.

Thanks for your interest Jeepy, I’m not going to say how much is invested in the lounge, in fact, I have all of the receipts in a bag but I’ve never added them up... the bag scares me...

1st off, Jessebelljr has expressed an interest in adopting Karmann. Her Iguana Emma has just recently passed away after a tough fight with cancer. What ever she decides, she was 1st "in line"

Karmann’s "cage" comes apart and will fit easily in a 5" x 8" trailer. The glass doors are 1/4" tempered glass and are VERY heavy so they would have to be packed very carefully. As I said in my Post above Karmann will have to be picked up because I won’t ship her.

Have you ever owned an Iquana? Can you post pictures of the lizards you own now? I’d love to see your babies! Tell me a little about yourself, married, kids, house/apartment, where you live, etc etc. Sorry to ask so many questions but the more I think about putting Karmann up for adoption, the more I worry...

Tracy, I don’t want to take Karmann away from you to early, since you won’t be moving until December. When would be a good time to get her? I am still trying to get over Emmas demise. Gawd that little girl spoiled me rotten!!! What about August or September, before the snow flies? My husband is still ’iffy’, but its up to me!!!!! My daughter is still ready to go on a ’road trip’ because my grandsons LOVED my dragon! LOL!! And I miss my ’cuddle bug’. I didn’t realize how big of a hole that she would leave in my heart. I miss her ’sneezing’, I miss her messy face when she would eat her baby food, I just miss her. She will be buried tomorrow and in sight of my kitchen window. I will be able to look out and see her everyday. Am I nuts? I have only had this feeling when we had to put our 18 year old Lab down because of cancer. She was cremated and sits on our frig, looking down at us. We have lost other dogs and other animals, due to illness or accidents, and these two have left me very sad. That is where the name ’jessebelljr’ came about. My labs name was Jesse and she was so much part of the family. Let me know when would be a good time to get Karmann. I don’t want to take her away from her mommy sooner than I have too.

    Boy, am I torn in a bunch of different directions! I don’t want to give her up at all but I know I can’t keep her. I don’t wan’t to give her up too soon but I don’t want to postpone the inevitable. I want to keep her with us as long as possible but I want her to help you with your loss and sadness.... {sigh}

August sounds good I guess, that will give us time to say our good-bys and you enough time to get everything together if you have to get the trailer. We can have the lounge ready to go when you get here or if you like we can leave it intact so you can watch me dissasemble it. (there are a lot of parts...)

I know you realize this but I have to say it, Karmann is not Emma. She’s a great Iguana but she’s feisty and opinionated and on occasion she can be a downright BRAT! She pretty much treats us as if we were staff at a luxury hotel, that is to say as long as the service is good she’s happy but if her room service is a minute late, she can get grumpy. She used to come and sit with us in the evenings while we watched TV but hasn’t done that in a while, she still watches TV though (Ev says it doesn’t matter what’s on but I think she likes "Spounge Bob" the best) As I said in my earlier posts, she came from a bad home and I’m betting that the man of the house was abusive/mean/heavy-handed/ beat her/not a good dad at all (pick one) because she’s always been a bit wary of me. She gets along with Evelyn just fine but generally, if I don’t have food, she’d rather not let me get too close.

Holy cow, you’d think I was trying to talk you out of this...

Call me if you have any questions, you did get my email right?

This is one of the nicest most compassionate threads I have seen ....I read and followed Emma’s tragic demise and felt Jbell’s pain ....

I read and feel your’s and Eve’s sadness too ....but the greatest thing is that you are sharing and giving in more ways than one. You are extremely generous too. That viv is a beauty!!

I am touched and hoping for the best outcome ....and J.bell can keep you posted on the life of Karrman via this site and private e-mail and pics....

And maybe someday there is the possibility of you having some re-union / visit ....

You folks are the best and I just wanted you to know I for one am watching and reading this...

I hope to continue reading all the way through a happy ending.....
