He could be even sneakier if he had a setup that actually allowed him to burrow around and act like a normal hognose. I keep mine’s very deep, and during the day, especially during certain TIMES of day, she is usually out above ground. Branches, rock decorartions, and fake plants are aesthetic, (usually; I do admit there are certain spots in a 4’X2’ cage where my hognose prefers a bit of foliage to "hide" under, but that onlt reinforces my intended point, which is that ability to burrow does not equate inabiity to see your pet.) Providing appropriate depth of appropriate substrate is not just aesthetic. Even those who balance their cage temps and brumation cycles so well that their hognoses go into heat while living on newspaper will admit that, when it’s all said and done, the snakes themselves prefer to be able to burrow.
