 How much for a hoggie

My mother wants to buy a hognose cuz she’s thinks their cute. We have 5 other snakes but she’s buying this one. Im not spending another penny. Anyways she fell in love with them when we went to the last hamburg show on june 14. We saw an adult probly a male cuz it was like 8-10in or so and was $75. I told her NO because I knew nothing of the species. Im responsible and I would like to no what Im getting into before I get it. All I knew is that they were very small snakes. So I went home and did a little research and found out they’re pretty much the same as corn snakes. same temperature and great disposition and great appatite. So I said to myself its an easy snake but I began to look on the internet and noticed they average on price like 200-250. My mother said heck no and said we’ll find a cheap one at the next hamburg show on aug.2. If theres one thing I noticed about expos is you usually get what you pay for. I got a nicaraguan boa for $75 but I took him home and noticed he had RI. So what is a good price for a normal baby western hognose.
Heres a few of my kids

I’ve seen them at shows anywhere from $50-$100 usually depends on how many are being sold at the show. I personally wouldn’t pay more than $65-$70 for a normal baby male and only if it was a proven feeder on frozen pinkies.

Why do you say that, is it because hoggies have trouble heating frozen thawed? Cuz thats all I feed my snakes is f/t.

It’s always a good idea to make sure any snake is eating before you purchase it, especially young snakes. For the case of the hognoses, some breeders will start their babies on toads or skinks so it is important to make sure that the snakes are eating pinkies and not something else. The last thing you want to worry about with a new baby snake is changing its prey items.

If you know the breeder and she’s offering a reasonable price, I would definitely go for it. These are great snakes an a lot of fun to own. Just to clarify, I also feed only f/t and my hogs eat like champs on f/t, but like any young snakes, it may take time for them to adjust. Just be consistent with feeding time, procedure, and leave the snake alone while it eats.

She’s is a breeder but I met her at the hamburg expo and she doesnt sell them at a good price haha. I think my mother said she was selling them from like 150-250 not sure of exact price. You said a good price is like $75. But her snakes are fit and healthy. I def. trust her.

Thats gonna have to be your call. You’ll have to decide if you want to spend extra money to get the snake now. You can definitely get western hogs much cheaper than $125 at shows and for $250 dollars you are talking adult breeding pairs. Again, your call but please don’t spend more than $125, that is just too much.
