 What is she thinking???

I am a freshman at my school and for an article for the school’s newspaper, I had to go down to the 4th grade classroom and interview the teacher. Everything went well (although she wasn’t the friendliest person in the world) until I was about to leave. I noticed that there was a small vase with hermit crabs in it . It made me really upset. The teacher was in a hurry to go to a teachers meeting and she told me she needed to leave. I acted like I was still writing and she told me to finish up and I could go. So when she left, I got out my cell phone and took two pictures to show to you guys. I wanted to show everybody because a lot of people think that a little tank can be thrown together and there you go, a crabitat. BUT I know everybody on this board have awesome tanks and I really like the fact that you all know your stuff.


Here are the pictures...They aren’t that great because I had to hurry and take them just in case the teacher came back in.







The vase had about 4 inches of sand in it (I’m guessing) But there isn’t any way those crabs can mold because the sand is too dry.

No water dish - just an old torn apart sponge

No extra shells

Hermit crab food in a seashell

1 medium crab and a small/medium crab


It made me sad to see this and I really want to say something to her about it, but I am scared to because like I said...She isn’t very friendly.

I was thinking about making up an email address and sending some care sheets to her and a NICE message. She will never know it was me.

Well everybody....What do you think? She really needs to update this tank...Just like the calendar behind it!

I love hermit crabs, even though they take a lot of care. They need so much room, two water dishes, extra shells, climbing space and most of all, time. I have the kids like having them! I agree that something should be said. Being tactful and extreamly polite would be your best option. You could casually mention you have hermit crabs, but have never heard of keeping them like that, that you have read they need salt water, fresh water, and a varied diet. You could give her a couple of websites with good information and even offer to post a few signs around school and the town that a free 10g tank (or larger, don’t be picky lol) is needed for a classroom donation.

THANKS FOR THE ADVISE!!!! I will def. say something to her, but I’m really scared to because I don’t want to make her mad or anything...

It’s the weekend...So I will think about something to say next time I interview her.
She most likely won’t, but this is what I WISH she would do...


I would go in to interview her and say "hey I have hermit crabs too, mine are in a 10 gallon and I really enjoy having them...I love to spoil them."

And then she would say...’Well, I am getting kind of tired of taking care of them.’

Then I could offer to take, or buy them. I WOULD DEF. buy them! I feel soooooooooo sorry for them!


School is almost out (32 days). Maybe I could offer to take care of them over the summer or something. Then maybe she would just give them to me...

I am such a dreamer! AHHH


Well I thought of these ideas today. Tell if you think any of them would work (yeah I know some are stupid)

But like I said...I really think I’m going to say something.

You should ask if you could take care of them in the summer. If she were to see your crabs, I bet she might give them to you. That was how I got my finches, I watched them over Christmas break and then they gave them to me. lol Good Luck!

I’ll print out those pictures and keep them in my purse. Next time I interview her I’ll be like ’Hey I noticed you have crabs too. I have 3 in a 10 gallon and I love having them, they are a lot of fun.’ Then I could be like ’Actually, I have some pictures of the tank and crabs with me.’ Then I can show them to her and ask her if she needs some one to watch them over the summer. It won’t be a problem to take care of them because my cousins/aunt/uncle have a 30 gal (I think it’s 30) that they kept 4 crabs in. I am going to ask if they will give to me. I’m only asking for it because I gave them my old playstation.

I told my mom about them today...She was mad that they were being kept in a vase. When I told her about keeping them over the summer she said "If she lets you take care of them over the summer, you can tell her they died over the summer and then...you could keep them" She started laughing...it was pretty funny.

Wait, do you think I should email something to her or go and talk to her....I would email a long message saying some stuff like:

*Thanks for letting me interview you...I really enjoyed it..blah blah
*I noticed you had hermit crabs...I have 3...tell her what is in the cage...etc
*Do you need a babysitter (for free) I would love to watch them over the summer...
*attach pictures to the email of my crabs and the tank


I am asking for advice because I just want to do the right thing lol

I think an email would help me get everything I need to say across, but I don’t know!

What do you guys think?

The only problem with this whole taking care of them over the summer thing would be if the crabs belong to a student and not to her. Hopefully that’s not the case!

Miss Bradley,
I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to respond to my emails and for letting me interview you. It seems like you have a lot of fun with your class.
I noticed that you have hermit crabs as class pets. I also have hermit crabs and I really enjoy having them and I love taking care of them just like all other animals. I named mine George, Izzy, and Callie (from Grey’s anatomy).
Ever since I was little, I have wanted to be a veterinarian. So, to help me have more experience with animals, I volunteer during the summer at places like ARF. I also voluntarily take care of pets of all types that belong to friends, family and teachers while they are on vacation. There hasn’t been a summer since 2nd grade when I wasn’t responsible for taking care of animals. I already have a job to take care of my neighbor’s dogs for the whole month of July while they are on vacation.
I was wondering if you need someone to take care of your hermit crabs over the summer. If so, I would love to watch them for you. I will provide everything they need for the whole summer. You wouldn’t have to pay for anything. I know you haven’t gotten to know me that well, but I promise to you that I am VERY responsible and I would take excellent care of your crabs if you allow me to be your pet sitter.

Well...I couldn’t find the right type of shower caddy anywhere, so I made that one using a new paint roller tray and one of those hooks that stick on the wall.

I finally found a shower caddy yesterday at target, so my cheapo one is gone lol.

I walk past her classroom every day at 11 and she is always in there teaching. So she has def. been at school.

It’s definately rude and if you get the chance, stop in and talk to her in person. And when you do, bring in a caresheet you printed out incase she doesn’t want to let you adopt them. The crabs are definately not thriving in there.

Im not suggesting this, but if it was me in your situation, I’d rescue those crabs whether she wanted me to or not.

Yeah I was thinking about walking in and stealing them one day when she wasn’t in the room.

In some ways it would be good because I would be saving two lives, but I would be stealing soooo.

That stupid vase would fit in my oversized purse easily. Or I could just Take the crabs out and leave the vase. I won’t steal them, but I’ve really been thinking about it!

I wouldn’t consider it rude if she simply emailed me back saying that she would rather me not take care of them, BUT I do consider not emailing back at all RUDE RUDE RUDE.

you should definatly talk to her in person and ask her if she got your e-mail. If she says yes, and that she does want you to take the crabs than great, if she says no she doesn’t want you to take them than you should tell her that you think she should research them more and give her some caresheets and explain to her that her crabs are unhealthy living in the vase

geeze just go over her head. go to the principal explain that they are being horribly cared for and that you would like to have something done about it. take print outs of careshhets and show him that you have facts on what they need. hopefully then He/She will go in and make her do something about it.

well i think that this person should do what he/shes doing right now and then after she says no go the the principle.

i mean come on... if you were the principle would you want to have to tell one of your beloved teachers that she is killing animals?

so i think that this person should ask the teacher only first then move on to higher authority.
