Emma Has Cancer I am a new member, but had to talk to someone about my 13 year old iguana, Emma. My family thinks I am nuts to care about this green lizard, but she is the best pet I have ever had! I am 57 and have gone through my share of pets. Emma sits on her table by a window, gets down to potty on newspaper in the kitchen, slops around in a large water dish, then goes back to her room. About 4 weeks ago, I noticed a large growth in the top and bottom of her mouth. Surgery took care of it, but the biopsy came back as cancerous. Her mouth started bleeding, so back to the vet. The bad news was that the cancer is now in her upper jaw bone. No cure. My vet assured me that she was in little to no pain. She is eating normally, but I now give her baby food with banannas or strawberries (her favorite). She has a few weeks, possibly a few months. The vet said that in his 30 years of service, he had never seen cancer in a reptile. He also told me if she stared acting distressed or really, really sick and it was in the evening or a Sunday when the vet’s office is closed, that I could humanely ’put her down’ by placing her in the freezer. That she would just go to sleep. I really don’t think I could do that, but it is good to know that if she gets really bad, then I have options to help her out. Thank you for letting me tell you about my little girl, Emma. She is really going to be missed.
