I was wondering if anyone could give me information on how closely a beaded lizards is related to a varanid, and how. I am kind of looking for phylogenic information if possible...I am trying to link the two in a paper I am writing. Any help that would save me a trip to the library would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Suzanne,

Until you mentioned it...I had no idea beaded lizards had any relationship to the monitors. I did try to find some info, but I didn’t come across much, except for saying beaded lizards were related to monitors. Never gave comparison or any other info then that. If I do find more info I will let you know.

Considering they have tails and two eyes and a tongue and four feet and are both lizards you have a novel to write!

Were did you get the idea that the two are related. Not that I’m being sarcastic or anything, I would rather say curious, never heard of it.

I was curious about that too JT. I searched around and searched around. Anyway they are in the Varanid family, consisting of Helodermatidae(beaded lizard and gila monsters) and Varanidae(monitors).

Probably asking a reptile expert might help you in your search. I’m new to that idea, never went far with research. Probably how their body is structured or their origin?

yeah gilas are venomous, although i’m not sure how potent the venom is. I’d like to find out the needs and requirements for keeping one though.

Gilas are venomous, but it is rare for them to kill humaans, they usually cause bleed and make you throw up. I read that they are legal as long as they are captive bred. And many other states have regulations for them.
