 Shedding Problem for 2" baby....

My 2" long baby house gecko was upside down with his shed all wrapped around him the other day when we came home. He was on his back thrashing like a madman...so I tried to mist some warm water on him to help and eventually I righted him. He still had shed on his legs, and his back/tail area. I remembered reading about helping them shed, but this is a house gecko who is so fast you sometimes can’t even tell which way he went. At any rate, we tried to carefully help him but it was just too stuck so we sprayed him down and put him in his own enclosure . Eventually, with our help, he got most if not all of the shed off. At first I thought he broke his back, but now I think his back is ok, but he hadn’t eaten in 3 daysuntil I started slapping him in the face with baby crickets until he would get so mad he would snap at them and eventually eat them. I got him to eat 3 crickets that way this morning. Tonight when I came home, his toes, which I was nearly sure were wasted, were looking a ton better and he was looking overall good but he was real unresponsive and lethargic. I bumped him on the side and actually tipped him on his side and he laid there like he was dead. I sprayed him and turned his heat up to 86-88 or so and put in a few crickets. later he was wlaking aroung, but still wont eat, drinks little, and I just don’t understand what could have caused all this!! I think all his hands are ok, but it is hard to tell right now. Could he be traumatized from his ordeal?? Or could he have broken something while trying to pull off his shed? Any help would be greatly appreciated..
Thanks!
Jim

You really should just wait for your geckie to shed on it’s own. it might be to scard when you keep spraying it and touching it.

LOL
Thats what I usually do....but this is a little more serious....I believe he may have punctured a lung thrashing around....or something like that...he has some very small pinhole-like wounds on his chest. I know this because he got ’stuck’ on the glass by the scab. I put neosporin on it tnight, but he hasnt eaten since day before yesterday and that day I tricked him into eating 3 crickets, but he hasn’t pooped since he ate those, which is bad too methinks....
:(
I’m afraid my little friend’s chances are wearing thin, but any help anyone could give would be appreciated...thanks
Jim

get a Vets opinion, those are the only guaranteed opinions that count, honeslty, i wouldnt wait too long as you said that he isnt getting better, use a moist hide in the neutral area (not hot or cold) keep it sprayed and moist every day, what are your temps, substrate, are you feeding calcium with or without D3, feeding more that crickets, try baby mealies....i need more info on your terrarium..... let me know, i had same problem about a month ago, IGGY is about 3 inches. he is doing great now.....

thanks shelly

ok I almost forgot.. if you are using sand GET IT OUT ASAP, babies get impacted very easy due to ingestation from sand, it CAN and WILL kill them, use apper towels at least until they are about 6 months old, let me know if you have any ?’s and give me as much info as possible about how you take care of your little one, let me know

temps can be up to 90 on warm side, try raising the temp a little more, also try soaking him in LUKE WARM filtered/pure water about 10-15 minutes 2x a day until all shed is off......

Shelly
Thanks so much for your advice, unfortunately "Always Gets Bit" wouldn’t eat any more, even with my trying to make him mad and get him to bite the food, and he ceased to be....it really sucks because then last night "no name", a med gecko that was the father to the eggs that our other big Med Gecko is dropping, died last night...in a different cage....we found all of our lizards except for hatchet while working in a pet store in the area. The owner said we could have any lizards we caught (since we were working midnight shift, and they don’t sell med geckos or house geckos) So far we’ve had 3 of the mediterranian’s die on us....only "G Rizl" is left and shes dropped 2 eggs so far and there are two more on the way. We had at one time a total of 13 lizards but now we have 9. I appreciate the help though becuase it is hard to find people trying to raise this lightning bolt of a lizard.... :)

Have a great day!

Jim
