that all depends on what kind of gecko you want.. there are thousands of different kinds of geckos... do you want something handleable? terestrial? arboreal? larger? smaller? tropical? arid? if your just a beginner to them theres leopards, cresteds, african fat tails, vipers, house,

theres leos and cresteds that would go in a 29 fine.. a crested would use more of the tank as they are semi arboreal (live in trees) where as leopards are terestrial(live on the ground) both are beginner geckos and both are handleable..

As Squee said, if your 29 gallon is horizontal (has more groundspace) then get a leopard gecko. They are very easy to take care of. They don’t need UV lighting and they can live in something as small as a 10 gallon tank. There are tons of information on them on the internet too so you don’t even need to waste money on a book. Just look up "Leopard Gecko" in Google.

Dammit, there are two really good sites I know of but this forum won’t let me use links.

Good idea. The first one is www dot gecko forums dot net and the second one is www dot geckos unlimited dot com. Check out the Leopard Gecko Community and General forums on this site too.

I think I speak for every other experienced reptile or amphibian keeper on this board when I say do not get any herp, invertebrate or small mammal from Petsmart, Petco, or any other large chain pet store. I have not been to any of these stores in the U.S. before but I have heard some nasty stories about how they treat their animals. You probably want a healthy animal so look for a breeder or a small local store that breeds their own reptiles. Leopard geckos are one of the most popular lizards on the market right now so I doubt you will have a tough time acquiring one. If you don’t mind having your gecko shipped to you, that first site I told you about has a list of breeders and their sites and I’m sure you could go from there. Plus buying your gecko from a breeder means you get to select from a variety of different color morphs.

it depends on the store.. there are some petsmarts and petcos that are actually decent if they have people that know what they are doing with reptiles working there..

Right. I had forgotten that the quality of the pet store reflects the staff working there and not the company itself. Sorry for giving you the wrong impression. As long as you do your research and make sure the place you get your leopard gecko from is taking care of it well, you should by alright. I just don’t trust big chain stores as much as I trust local businesses and breeders. That’s all.
