 Looking at getting a gecko

Hi. I was looking for all of your expertise! I would like to get a gecko. I have learned so far that the enclosure doesnt have to be too big. I have a uromastyx now and we are looking at getting a 5’ long tank for him. I would like to know if all geckos have the same temperment? I like the way the tokays look but I heard they are mean and bite? Is a Gecko an animal that can be handled? Or is it more of an observation animal? Are they a desert animal like the uro? Or do they need humidity?

The tank size of a gecko completely depends on the gecko, it’s not an absolute 1 way cage size. To tell what size your cage is, go to the members area, click the tank size to gallon conversion button, and type in the dimensions of the tank.

Geckos have very different personalities, and they all have different care requirements. So please do not look at the entire genre of lizards as one, but as many. Hundreds of many, in fact. When you find a specific species you want, go to google (or this website), and look up caresheets. Ie, "Tokay+Caresheet". Look at many as some are terribly incorrect. I also recommend to always go for the largest tank size recommended as it usually ends up more content in the end. Your tank should always have a thermometer and hydrometer to properly measure the temps and humidity so that it’s exact to your future gecko’s needs. I recommend the digital one as the sticker and dial ones can be off.

Tokays are aggressive, bite fierce, need high humidity, and need a tropical setup. Look up care sheets for tokay geckos...

If you’re looking for something you can handle, and can live in a more arid environment (but cannot be put on loose substrate), then you should seriously look into the beginner gecko - the leopard gecko.

there are a ton of different kinds of geckos like kelli said.. most with different care and requirements.

tokays if you get adult wild coughts are 99.9% positive to be aggressiv and bite. if you can find a captive born baby and handle it enough and consistantly when they are young they are nice geckos.

depending on the gecko yes they can be handled.. if your looking for a beginner gecko here are some options...

terestrial(cant/dont usually climb glass) look into leopard geckos viper geckos or african fat tail geckos
arboreal(up in trees and can climb glass) theres the crested geckos or gargoule geckos

after looking into the Tokays, even though I really like their look, I don’t think the aggressionis something I would want to deal with. I think I will settle between a crested Gecko and an african fat tail. They do better when you have more than one as long as they aren’t male .. is that right?

no they dont.. reptiles even if both female do best alone.... yes you can keep more than one in the same cage but they do best when alone because there is no compition for food or territory then
