Shedding problem - possible loss of eye...and tumor?? Please help!

So a few weeks ago I moved from Mankato where I was living to back home which is about 2 hours away. I didn’t quite have the means to transport all of my animals back home yet tho, unfortunately, so my best friend said she would take care of everything while I was gone. Yeah...but apparently she doesn’t know HOW to take care of animals....they all had food but no water for about 3 weeks.

Anyway, where I’m going with this is that I have Mo, he is about 2 years old and a tremper albino. He was up to about 35 grams or so when I left. I come back to get him and he is skinny as a stick. His thigh muscles he used to have are totally gone and his tail is stick thin. He also had some stuck shed over his eyes and noes and mouth that was there for who knows how long (because he didn’t have any water in his cage...no humidity to get it off). I got him back home, and I gave him a soak in warm water and got the majority of the shed off with a q-tip. It was not only stuck on his face but like ON his eyes....I was really gentle removing it, but I honestly don’t think his one eye made it....and his head is all swollen up on that side of his face right behind his eye. Do you think this is a tumor? Infection from the eye? Anyway...I just got the rest of the shed off his other eye today a little bit ago after about a 30 min soak in 3 diff changings of water. his eye looks like it’s going to be ok on that side.....but he still hasn’t been eating or drinking even (except when he’s getting soaked) and I’m really afraid he’s gonna die. I’m so mad at my friend for allowing him to get into back shape like that, but I feel responsible too because I couldn’t take him with me. I guess I’m just wondering tho if anyone else has had anything like this happen...and maybe some suggestions on how I can get him to eat and drink again. He’s been on meal worms for probably the last year or so, but now I don’t know if he can see them to get them.... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

That is so incredibly sad. Poor little guy. I would definitely get some Repti-Aid (found at a pet specialty store.) Repti-Aid, or something like it, is an emergency "food" for sick reptiles. You mix the powder with water and you can create different consistencies depending on how sick a reptile is. I would take it really slow, feeding very small portions several times day to get his body used to eating again since the poor things been starved for so long. Feeding too much too soon could kill your gecko. You can also put some of the Repti-Aid in his bath/soaking water for some to absorb through his skin.

If your gecko’s head is swollen by his eye that’s messed up, I would get that looked at by a vet. It might be a good idea to do it any way just because he sounds so bad off. Perhaps the vet can give you a more potent "repti-aid" type food, who knows.

Poor little leopard gecko.

I agree that a vet visit is probably your best bet.

To go along with tpau15’s suggestion you can also try a slushy mix. Something like this:

Quote:

To make the slushy you need:

•1 small can of Hill’s a/d pet food (available at most vet’s)
•1/4-1/3 cup of Ensure (any flavor but chocolate. I prefer vanilla for my geckos)
•1 jar of squash baby food
•1/4-1/3 cup pedialyte
•2 tablets of milk thistle (herbal supplement, liver purifier, found at drug stores)
•2 tabs or contents of 2 capsules of Acidophilus (GI system probiotic, found at most drug stores)
•1/2 tsp calcium powder
•1/2 tsp vitamin powder
•1 large handful of mealworms (I’ve also used crickets)
Directions:

•Blend ALL ingredients in a blender or food processor, slowly adding the mealworms as you blend
•Puree all ingredients until completely smooth
•Pour into ice trays and freeze
•Store the cubes in ziplock bags
When you use a cube, thaw it out in a small container, this is where the empty baby food containers come in handy. Use a small eye dropper, filling it full, put a drop at a time on the gecko’s nose, letting him lick it.

Please keep us informed on how your critter is doing.
