I was wondering if I could keep a male and female leopard gecko in a 30 gal tank? What type of stuff should I have in the cage like place to hide, places to climb, etc. Any help would be appreciated

No, you can’t. Although it would be fine for 2 females. For one gecko you need at least 3 hides. You can have somethings to climb on, make sure they are wide enough so your gecko won’t fall.

Well if you wanted to breed them that is completely different. However, I would study them for a good period of time before you started to breed. Many members on her have said that breeding costs a lot of money, not to mention time, and you need to know what your going to do with potential babies. Leo’s don’t just have one clutch. They have many.

Either way you can’t house the male and female together year round. You will have mental and physical problems if you do.

Okay as evryone else has said... No, you cannot keep a male and a female together...he will over-mate her and she will get stressed and die... But a 30gal is great for 1-2 females...
They need at least 3 hides each...a warm hide a cool hide and a humid hide... those are the nessecities... they also need a dish of pure calcium... a dish of water... and a solid substrate... no sand!
They need a warm side and a cool side... the warm side...i keep it at 92-94 degrees and the cool side at 82-84 degrees... the humid hide is on the warm side... mist it like every other day...
thats wht I got right now...

Thanks for the great info, I am going to build a cage that is about 30 gal and split it to make two cages. How old do the leopard geckos have to be in order to sex them? Thanks again for the info.

About a year old to sex them accuratly, unless you know what temprature they were incubated at as eggs.

If you don’t know basic care, I would recemmond researching and just owning them for a while before breeding.

yes you can keep 1 male to 3 females and you CAN KEEP a male to 2 females and EVEN keep 1 male to 1 female aslong as their is only one male per tank your fine as for housing them together year round well i do and i would love it if some one said there is something wrong with the state of my leos phisically or mentally there is nothing wrong with any of them and WOW you guys blow alot out of the water about this!!!

any ways breeding leos is great its not a big money maker though but it helps pay my feeder bills as for money you need to buy lights for the tanks heat pads hides and also small crickets you can either build an incubator or buy one i have a hubavator and it works great for me but i need a new one for this year it takes alot of time to make sure the babies you produce are healthy feeding them everyday making sure there is fresh water and well kept husbantry its very time consuming and if these are your first leos ever you might want to wait abit befor breeding them do alot of reading in books or the internet and see if your really up to it also a female leo can have 1-3 eggs every time she lays and can lay up to 10 times in a year the average though is 2 eggs 6 times a year and if you have a hatch rate of 100 percent thats 12 new mouths to feed is that something your really ready for?

Snakesgalore I wasn’t making any statements about how you personally keep your geckos. But as a rule of thumb newbies are looking for advice. Your geckos might be perfectly fine, but its not good advice to give a newbie. Most of the time if you keep just 1 female and 1 male together there could be problems, but there are always exceptions to this rule. But if your going to "teach" you need to teach the rule, not the exception.

what is this rule cuz its a living aniamal there really is no rules for them geckos are a living creature that breaths air and has its own brain they think on their own and if a female dosnt like the other female yes they will even fight but even you can have your own opinion i was just stateing the fact that yes you can house them together obviously people know that if you house a male and female anything together that they would breed im sure people arnt as stupid as some other members make them seem i read post after post of people saying NO you cant house them together and its actually a false statement that they are making ive actually never seen any type of stress or phsical problems from housing 1 male to any number of females other then the fact of them breeding there is nothing wrong with this im not just going on my experiance from my geckos but from many other geckos that i have came across im my many years of dealing with reptiles so plez dnt get mad at me for saying that its perfectaly fine to house them together but they will know of the aftermath with eggs and hatchlings and plez direct me to any kinda info that has to deal with houseing 1 male to one female and i would like to see the physical and mental abuse that was said up above

I’ve had that problem. I’m not going to lecture anyone on how they keep their LGs, because I don’t keep mine by what the rules say. But I did house a male and female together for a while, and I had problems. The female ate less, never stopped, but ate less and began getting skinnier and I noticed a lot of bite marks on her neck(from the male mating her) and I finally separated them and she got better.

I guess it really depends on the gecko. As you said, they’re living, breathing animals and each their own. They’re all different, therefor they may have problems and they may not.
