Is it natural for the beetles to dig in the oats

I put about 4 beetles in a inch of oatmeal in a container & they all seem to dug under it & live underneath rather than moving around on top. Is this natural b/c i dont know how they mate but its seems weird.

Should i take out some of the oats so it wont be able to dig so deep/

Note i have paper towel rolls in it.

What species are you talking about? Super Worms in their worm morph (whatever you call it) dig under the oatmeal all the time. :-)
