Hermit crab in Gecko tank? Hi, you may have read my other post, I just got my first gecko and asked some questions, well I want to use live plants in my tank and I don’t know if I should plant them in eco-earth, or regular soil. But anyway someone on another forum said to keep a hermit crab in the tank for waste cleanup! Thats sounds like an awesome idea, I never would have thought of that, and didn’t know that hermit crabs eat waste. Anyone else think its a good idea?

Hermit crab in Gecko tank? Oh, and if you dont mind me adding to your post (sorry, but this still relates): Would earthwrms be a good addition to a tank with a crestie in it? They would not be wild caught... are there any other "natural cleanup crews"?

Hermit crab in Gecko tank? I thought about the pill bugs because I actually use those as cleanup in my hermit crabs tank lol.
But then I thought the cresty might try to eat the pill bugs..... and I don’t think thats a good idea, I think they could cause impaction. Let me know if its really safe though :)

Hermit crab in Gecko tank? the pill bugs are fine for the crestie to eat. not a great staple insect for them to eat regularly but if they catch one occasionally it will be fine. im gona use pill bugs for my natural tank that im building.

Hermit crab in Gecko tank?
There was actually a thread I happened to come across a long time ago, and really wish I could find it now. It was a group of people talking about having those small aquarium crabs in the water dish. They kept the crabs in a 3" dish with a rock in the center. The idea was to halp keep the water clean, and to have something to consume those "stupid crickets that keep drowning." SOme people have kept them with the cresteds for quite awhile, and since they were separated by evironmental preference, they didn’t really interact with one another. The water dish is usually a constant source of water, but not all the time do the cresteds use it if the cage is misted.
A hermit crab is an interesting concept, but aren’t they not super picky about what they eat. I’ve seen wild ones eat at slow or sickly fish, and I picture them trying to chew at a sleeping crested.

Hermit crab in Gecko tank? It’s not a good idea to mix hermits with cresteds. Hermits are good at pinching, and will climb as well. This would leave little to no where for your crested to escape from the more aggressive crab. Hermit crabs also do best in groups, and that could easily stress a crested out. Or, imagine the crested jumping for the moving antennae thinking it’s going for an oddly shaped cricket and getting pinched! Or the crested coming down to check out what food’s available ground-level and startling the crab into using its claws! Neither would be pleasant for either animal. I can’t imagine a crested keeping its tail for very long with a hermit crab in the cage.
Cresteds and hermits make great pets individually, but should not be mixed. If you’re intent upon mixing species, I suggest more research. The most common mix I have heard of working with cresteds is the giant millipede. I don’t have personal experience with that, tho, nor do I know anyone personally that does. I do have crested gecko and hermit crab experience in their separate environments, and I never would have considered the two as compatible.
