 Found a baby Garter Snake!!!!

I found a baby garter snake and i thought that... well I’ve always wanted a garter snake, so i thought it’d be less cruel to take it in as a baby. I had trouble feeding the two adult ones that i had... what should i feed this baby???? and how will i get the food????????? :/ HELP!!!! I really want to keep this one!

Just saw your post! Sorry for the late reply... :)

Babies can eat small worms and/or slugs. More "wriggly" worms are better, as they tend to attract the snake’s attention more then calm ones. I’d just set the worm or slug down in your tank and then watch from a distance, as some snakes don’t eat while you’re there. O.o lol

As for how to find the prey: Are you in the city, or country? If you’re in the city, you have to buy earthworms (bait shops, maybe?). Slugs... well, you may not be able to find those.

If you’re in the country, you can find worms under logs, sticks, in the garden, etc. Slugs in the same places. Really easy! Just collect the ones that look about the right size for your snake and leave them in the tank. :)

Also... what are your temps for the snake? housing? lighting? All that needs to be right or he might not eat.

kk thanks...ummmm i let that snake go but i found another baby garter snake same size (4-5 in.) i just got the stuff for it yesterday i have a heat pad to go under it. and for the substrate i used this coconut soil stuff that grows (stuff i originally got for my toads) i hope that’s OK for it i didn’t have news paper a stuff my mom said the coconut would be fine. i did my studying. but there are still some unanswered questions....
1. How big are the teeth on a baby that size do you think???
2. Do BABY garter snakes even have teeth, i know that adults do?
(and yes i live in the country... 80 acres. lol hope that might help with any other questions i might have) :)

You really have to watch those heat pads, as esp. for garters, they can get too hot. Do you have any thermometers? You need those.

And yes, the coconut will be fine. Is it Eco-Earth (brand name)?

VERY tiny.

They do have teeth, but they’re so small, if a baby bit you... you wouldn’t feel them probably.

80 acres... you should have no problems finding worms then. ;)

Garters will also eat lizards, frogs, toads, and minnows along with the worms and slugs. You just have to make sure that they are the right size for the baby. Some people have had luck getting them started on pinky mice, but mine would never eat them. You could also feed them the feeder gold fish from the pet stores as well. I get large minnows from the bait shops and I get earth worms and night crawlers from there as well, and walmart has been selling worms here in the hunting section. That is a big help for me when I dont have time to hunt for mine. Good luck with the little guy!

Although they CAN eat these, amphibians are really not recommended. The amount of parasites that they carry is often too high, puts your snake at too great a risk of catching some and then getting ill. Probably better to stick with fish (thanks for adding that, btw! forgot about fish! =)), worms, slugs.

Yeah already have her in her nice cozy habitat side by side with my ribbon. Its funny watching them though they stand themselves up against the glass and looks like they are sizing each other up!
