Biting problem, please help hey i have 2 young garter snakes, I’ve had them for about 2-3 weeks now, they have been eating fine and been fine with handling, but recently they have both sloughed, the smaller 1 has been fine since, but the slightly larger 1 has become quite snappy when i go either pick it up for feeding or handling, it has not discouraged me at all, as they don’t pack a Punch in their little bite, but will this be a problem in the near future, once i have it out and am holding it, the biting stops but it just stresses & tries to get to get away, so to stop stress i tend to place it back in its tank

Biting problem, please help this is normal, and the reason maybe becuase after a meal (especially when larger than normal) they dont want anything to mess with them and will bite. are there a bunch of hides in the tank? if not that can be another reason for stress.
and as you handle him if handled right, you will have no biting problems. I have trained captive garters, but I can pick up and work with wild garters just as easily. Its all about the handling.
Good Luck!
ps once you get the handling down its so fun to work with wild garters you can see a wild personallity but they arent trying to hurt you, they treat you like they are trying to climb a tree or something

Biting problem, please help Thank you, I live in the UK, so I don’t encounter wild garters, it was before feeding that the striking occured, it seems fine now, I think it maybe that it was just hungry as it hadn’t eaten while it was in slough, there are enough hides in the tank, I have 2 normal type hides and a piece of slate, which is their favourite, although while in slough the larger 1 kept buryin its self, I only have a basic tank at the moment and have been planning out a new layout with plenty of climbing apparatus, etc. But that has been put on hold at the moment as I may have to rehome them as I am planning on going into the army, but till I find out for defenat I am trying to get them used to handling with out stressing out so that when they do go to a new home they will be friendly & not intimidate the new owner with striking, although I will only rehome them with some 1 who knows what they are doing, so that shouldn’t be a problem, I love holding them and watching how they move its fasinating
