 Hard?

are garter snakes hard to keep? what size and kind of tank do i need? like half and half, or just large water bowl?

Garters are very easy to keep. You’d be best off with a 20 gallon long tank with a secure lid. You don’t want to tank to be half and half, a large water bowl will do. You’ll want a hot side of around 85 degrees and a cool side of 75 degrees. You need a hide on each side. You’ll also probably want to put some branches in the tank because garters like to climb and bask in them.

what about substrate? and what size of tank for a baby?

I use reptile carpet for substrate. You can use bark as long as it isn’t pine or cedar. I’d start with a 10 gallon for a baby, just make sure you have a lot of places for it to hide. The 10 gallon should do until it’s a year or two old.
