and for the person who said juvinile black rat... I beleive that is an adult and also the closest looking ratsnakes to that are grey or texas rats (maybe great plains) but if you look up those snakes and then look up fox snake you will see that its a fox snake

gopher snakes pine snakes and bull snakes rattle there tails. the mimick rattle snakes by doing this and also puff out there cheecks and make an S pattern when they feel threatened.
I have a gopher snake and it looks like one to me

Most all medium sized snakes rattle there tails and puff out their heads, especially ratsnakes. (most not as extreme as pituophis though).

oh wow i had never heard of that befor. i always thought that was something that just pits did. my gopher snake is awesome when it rattles its tail and strikes, the first time he did it i was holding it and it felt like a phone vibrating. havent seen him puff up his cheeks yet tho, but he s still very young
the pattern looks like my gopher snakes, but i heard that rat snakes look simlar. i guess it all depends where the snake was found, because we dont have rat snakes in bc, but i huess that most of the us has rat snakes and gopher snakes and every other type it could be. im new to being a snake owner tho and i mostly just know about mine

A difference you can tell between the ratsnakes and pituophis is that pituophis’ saddles change slightly in pattern/color in three different areas of the snakes body. And on the side of a pituophis there are "checker" like marks, while on a ratsnake like the one pictured, there are single marks on the sides.

good point, now that i look closer its not the same as mine and the three different color thing makes sence. it was the tail rattle thing that threw me off but i now know that rat snakes do it also
