 Feeding babies

hey guys, I came home to find that my supposed to be male wandering garter snake had young ones, all 9 of them. I didnt know that garters did live birth! no eggshells anywhere guys and girls. Her name was DANTE, but now I don’t know. What should I feed these little crawlers? Small crickets? small fish? These little ones are skinnier than my shoe laces. To think I found their mom starving and half dead by the side of the creek and I stuffed her full of fish, mice and rats.

Definately do not feed crickets. Small rosy red minnows would work, but you may also be able to get them to eat cut up trout pieces (no thiaminase). Small earthworms (not red wrigglers or whatever they’re called) and cut up pinky parts may also work. One thing about the babies is that they usually don’t eat until they have shed for their first time (maybe a week or so) so you might have to wait a while to get started.

To late for the cricket advice. I poured them all in there and that sucked, they just stressed out the babies so I had to iradicate hanually. Tried the red wrigglers as well, they nevr sniffed them. Got twenty minnows and half of them ate. They already shed on their first day so I know they where ready to eat. The ones that ate ate 2 fish. mice next week, but I dont want to cut them up, its not pretty.....o wait frozen huh, that should make it easier.

Well to bring you guys up to date...... They have gotten a little bigger now, almost as wide as the shoe laces and longer than the palm of your hand. They eat at least 2 to 3 rosey minnows each and they fight over food. I will split them up in 2 groups soon. I am always there watching them like an eagle checking for food fights and one experience I had with one of them swallowing substrate. I had to grab him by the neck and squeeze and work it back out of his neck, finally to the mouth and out. That was scarey. I am not loosing any of these little guys. Everyone if eating. I just need to find people that would want a garter snake like you guys.
Anyone looking for wandering garter snakes. They eat anything and their mom only grew to 18", I guess poor supplements and lack of food in the wild. They aclimate to their new tank in seconds , but not handlable once they have tasted food and their saliva is said to be mildly toxic. Thank you for reading! Denver Colorado

Another update!Still have 9 of the little buggers, no casualties. Petsmart had some fairly larger minnows that seem to look like the base green variety and bigger. One of those fish fills one of them. I haven’t separated them yet but they are in a bigger aquarium so they are further apart when they eat. Thats all for now. Soon tine for mice.
