Garters can musk if frightened, its a defense to get predators to let go, its not really awful like a skunk or anything(luckily mine does not do this), mine is very easy to handle and has never even snapped at anyone, they are fast little suckers, and they only have a ridged jaw, no real big teeth, even if you picked up one that does bite.

We had ours for about 3 yrs? ANd he never tried to bite even when he was in the blue! He had a really good "attitude"! I think that they are good starter snakes especially for kids! It was really good for my son to start out with then he moved on to corns.. he still has a corn but now wants another garter snake he really enjoyed his because it wa sout more in teh day as to where his corn comes out more at night! So I am about to order him a florida blue!

They only stink when they musk, and if you feed them too many fish.
