 The Many Garters Of V.I.

Hi, I live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, CA. on this island i have seen over 30 different species of garter snakes, but over all, the coolest is the Melanistic ones that live in the rivers and lakes. i was wondering, just how many species of garters are there, i look under some wooden planks in my back yard, and i see three or four completely different looking snakes, some with red stripes, some with green, some with orange, some with blue, most of them are northwesterns i think, but i see lots of different kidns like checkered and wandering. some of the garter snakes i have seen out here were about 5 feet long and nearly as thick as my wrist. they are black with three yellow stripes and have orange spots on their sides inbetween the lines, i think these are common garter snakes, but they are too big to tell. small garter snakes here are considered to be under 2 feet long. just thought id share that Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, is THE place to find garter snakes. not saying anything about anywhere else. so anyone in the area should definitly visit this place. its amazing

There is no certain number of species, i think... down here in south texas and in through mexico, we are getting more new subspecies because of cross breeding.

you guys make no sense. i don’t see it logical to be adding a subspecies a year. it could be 5 subspecies of garters a year or one every 5 years.

we only started adding subspecies like 30 years ago. so how can there be hundreds of species that we added?
