 My First Frog!!!

Okay, so my parents agreed to let me get a froggy. I am so excited! I have a 10 gallon tank as my limit though... So what kind of frog can i comfortably fit in a 10 gal aquarium?

If you want a really beautiful frog, I’d go for a red eyed tree frog. They can run expensive, about 40-60 dollars each. You can also get something cheaper like a cuban tree frog, common green tree frog, grey tree frog...they’re all under 10 bucks a pop. You can also get a pacman frog...they can be aggressive though mine is not. They can eat bugs, but I feed him pinkies and fish. Any of those I’d say are good starter frogs.

But just remember that you’ll need eco earth substrate, some moss, a dish for water and plenty of branches and plants for climbing and hiding. You’ll also need UVB light for them to grow properly. Good luck!

I think out of all of my frogs, the grey and red eyed tree frogs are the easiest to take care of. I love the chirp that my male grey makes...it’s like this semi high pitched yelp...very cute. My cuban’s call is like a baby whining.

Pacman can be aggressive and are a look, but don’t touch kind of frog. If you want one you can handle, I’d go for a red eye or a whites tree frog. Both are very docile.

I think I am actually going to get some firebelly toads. I am going to get 2 for a 10 gallon tank. Is this a good choice?

I am going to get a 20 gallon tank for them, so how many can I put in the 20 gallon tank? People say 4 gal of space per frog, so maybe i can fit 5, but I think I’ll only go with 3? Ya I’ll get 3 toads and put them in a 20 gallon. I am still doing a lot of research on them. Do they really eat pinkies? And is there such thing as a firebelly that has a blue back?

FBTs are a great choice for that size tank, and the fact that you can have a group of them will make for a cool setup. I’ve never heard of them eating pinkies, I would think the frogs would be too small for that. A diet of mainly crickets is fine, just get a good vitamin supplement to dust them with. And you can vary it with some earthworms, guppies, occasional waxworms, etc.
There probably are some FBTs out there with blue backs, it’s a genetic mutatoin some frogs have where they actually lack the yellow pigment that together with the blue gives them that green color. It’s basically the opposite of an albino, and they are REALLY hard to come by, and probably very expensive.
For the setup, a half and half would work well. You could do a setup with eco-earth and then a large water dish on one side (big enough to swim in, with maybe some rocks to vary the depth a bit). And then just add in whatever hides you want, fake plants, real plants, whatever you’re up for basically. If you want a slightly more interesting setup, you could make a plexi-glass divider for the water area, then you could get a filter and make it kind of like a water fall or something cool like that.

When you say a group what do you mean? If I get a 20Gal, how many frogs would nnicely fit in it? Also, do you have any ood caresheets? Or websites that are good for FBT care? I really want to make them a cool setup. What kind of live plants can I put in the tank? I want to make it so it is like a jungle, there will be a lot of plants. And I will do a half and half. Anything else I should know?

You could comfortably fit 3-5 FBTs in the 20 gallon. This website has numerous care sheets on FBTs. As far as plants go, I know that java moss is a cheap and good aquatic plant. Good luck!

Males can get territorial with each other. Also, it’s hard to monitor feeding and health of four or five different toads when they’re all in the same tank. I say one male, plus a number of females that honestly represents how many you can seriously keep track of as individuals. Probably not more than three, total.

I mean like if Frog A isn’t acting quite the same that it normally does, you should be aware of that. In large groups, it’s easy to tell if there’s something wrong with the whole group, and it’s easy to tell if one is in REALLY bad shape, but if you’ve got one that just isn’t doing quite as well sometimes as the others, it’ll be better off if you notice that.

Okay, I get ya. So for me I think my limit for now will be 2. Until I get more experienced. But, now I am really starting to want a pacman frog. I don’t know what to do. I’m thinking, maybe I will get the FBT’s now, and when I m more experienced with frogs, I’ll take on a pacman.

-Ryan

P.S. Does anyone have some good name ideas?

I suggest that you wait until you get them, get to know their habits and the corky things they do. From observing them you will definitely come up with names for them. For example, I have Patches because he has one eye, Prodigal because he came back after being gone for 4 months, The Godfather because he sits on the tallest part of the tank and watches everyone below, Bully because he initiates fights, and Big Mama because she is huge, and 5 others who are nor named after the Backyardigans (my daughter named them).
