I think my frog is sick... SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!

Okay so, about 3 months ago i was give an Albino African Clawed Frog, I have no idea of his age... but wasn’t really briefed on how to take care of him except from our local pet shop that didn’t have much to say. He was really active an rambunctious, when we first got him but recently about 3 weeks ago he started to act funny and didn’t move as much. We recently cleaned the entire aquarium he and our 12 year old gold fish live and followed guidelines as best as possible to ensure a healthy environment... We replaced the entire filter system and bubble system because the ones given to us were extremely ancient, we also replaced the rocks at the bottom.
His eyes are bulged and glazed over, he looks a bit bloated, and isn’t eating from what i have seen. He has also been very still and not full of life. I wanted to make sure he was alive today because he hadn’t been moving so i swooshed around the thermometer in there and usually he swims fast from side to side and i got a little wag of the leg but that’s about it.
Someone mentioned what temp the water should be at and since he is not in an air conditioned place we put a fan on him throughout the night and then stick ice in a plastic bag during the day to keep the water at 75 degrees.
I am afraid to change the water again as i may have been the one that caused the aggravation and irritation in the first place.
Could someone please tell me whats wrong with my frog and how to fix him, I’ve been googling it and just cant seem to find an exact cause.
I have grown quite fond of our naked frog and would like to keep him alive as long as possible, so please any help and suggestions would be FANTASTIC!

It’s definately possible that the whole water change shocked him, usually you want to leave some of the original water, and since you changed everything in the tank it probably didn’t get time to cycle. When starting over a tank like that it’s best to give it time so that bacterial levels kind of even out, there’s something they do with the ammonia produced by the animal waste, the bacteria take care of that from what I understand. And the goldfish produces a lot of ammonia on it’s own, which could be irritating the frog right now. And also make sure that you’re not using tap water, there are a lot of things like chlorine and chloramine in tap water that can make a frog sick. So if you are using it, either leave it out for a day for everything to evaporate or buy something like aquasafe or I think reptisafe is another one, they’re just drops you can add to the water to make it safe for frogs.
What size tank do you have, just out of curiosity? The goldfish and frog need at least ten gallons each, so a 20 gallon or larger would be good for them, just a side note.
And try checking the pH and all the other levels in your tank, you can get a test kit at most petstores. If the levels are really high or really low that could be part of the problem.

Hopefully everything will settle back to normal soon, good luck

Thanks for your quick response!
Well first off I have a 20 gallon tank!! So i think I’m in the clear. I did do the water conditioner and waited about 2 hours for all of the water to filter through our new filter... i kept the fish and frog in about a gallon of their original water and added about another gallon of the new water and let them sit for an hour or so, then added them to their newish tank.
I decided to bring the frog home with me, he is bloated and his skin is waving around like water, and his eyes are EXTREMELY swollen, it even looks like they have burst open. i found something on the internet that it could be, bloating disease... and spoke with our local fish store he suggested keeping him away from the gold fish... so he is in a 2 gallon temporary tank and seems to be moving around a lot more, but i am still really worried that he is still dying. I bought some tetracycline but am a little unsure how its supposed to be used, i put 5 drops just like the bottle said and assume he is supposed to eat them since they just sit on the top of the water but hes not budging, he is happy to be up in the air... and I purchased a little piece of bark that he will be able to prop him self on for more air. ALSO, i put some fish tank salt.. just a few pebbles since he is in such a small tank. I hear that was good....

Anything other suggestions or comments are extremely welcome as I am just guessing and testing now... Hopefully ’m following good guidelines...

I know this might sound weird but go along with me. Do you have an over-the-top filter or underwater? I was never able to keep my ACFs alive with an over-the-top They all died from dropsy or bloating disease. Four years ago I decided to try again but with no filter and the 2 I had lived. I then decided to try an underwater filter and see how they did. It’s been another 1 year and they are in great health, happy, he’s croaking, she’s laying eggs every once in a while, and they lay on the filter for a fun vibrating ride. They are both 4 years old. The reason I ask is because I had read somewhere that the filter affects their chemistry balance or something like that. A breeder also told me not to use a filter, a heater, or a light unless I have live plants.

That could be it, hes at home now in a temporary home and seems to be improving quite well, I’m hesitant when it comes time for him to be re introduced in our fish tank.
But, The frog was kept in similar conditions with his previous owner, the owner had the over the top filter as we do now and similar bubbler except he claims he never ever cleaned the water and it was cloudy green yuck water, the feeding situation was also similar although when he is healed I am thinking about adding the blood worms to his diet because he has been on fish flakes and floating pellets for quite a while now. I’m hesitant to give him his floating food again because it was also around the time we got those pellets that he began to get sick.
So, I can put live plants int he aquarium with the frog and fish? I wanted to do that, but was nervous about it, so I held off and got a few areas he could go inside for shelter.

Well the frog will probably uproot the plants, so I’ve never done any live ones in there. I mean it won’t hurt the frog or fish, just know that they might not last long.
Also the salt is very good, it’ll draw out some of the fluid building up in the frog. I don’t know anything about the medication you mentioned, so I can’t help with that unfortunately.

I think my frog is sick... SOMEONE HELP PLEASE!

Okay so update to my sick frog!
The medicine feeder I got, the tetracycline, he is not eating. It is just sinking and dispersing throughout the water he is in. Today, i really was desperate for him to have some of the medicine feeder and held him and put a drop on his mouth to get him to have some, BUT HIS EYES STARTED TO BLEED... like they popped or something. They were super puffy and a little red before they popped and now its like one of them have popped and was bleeding. WHAT DO I DO?! Is he blind now, has the eye really popped?
Should I be getting something else to put in the water for his dropsy, have I diagnosed the wrong disease? He is not AS bloated as he was yesterday, but it still somewhat bloated, i assume that has gone down because of the aquarium salt i have been putting in his tank...
what to do now?!

I don’t know if he is blind but the salt is not a bad thing. Plenty of people add salt when their ACFs are having trouble. Give him the night and let us know how he’s doing in the morning.

I am so sorry about his illness!

Wow-poor guy! Definitely sounds like bloat. Hopefully he will get better.

Keechoo-interesting about the filter thing! I had 3 adfs in non filtered temp tank until their 10 gallon was ready and shortly after they were introduced in the 10 gallon (which had filter on back) they each started to bloat and died! Hmm...

I am by no means an expert as I am new to frog ownership as well, but I can tell you that my tadpole developed dropsy (severely bloated with air, floating upside down, internal bleeding) and I gave him Maracyn II (available at most pet stores). I don’t know what the tetracycline is, but this was a powder that you just add to the water, they don’t have to ingest it as it is absorbed through the skin. In my case it worked and there was a very noticeable improvement within 48 hours. After one week I was able to put him back in the tank with the other tadpoles and frogs (I really thought he was a goner since he looked so terrible).

I don’t know if your situation is the same, but in my case I believe the dropsy was caused by overfeeding and the food was creating bacteria. After that I kept them in a much larger amount of water, changing half every other day, and making sure not to feed anymore than they could eat in an hour. I don’t know if this will help you but wanted to let you know that the Maracyn II did work in my case.

the Maracyn i purchased doesn’t have directions on weather or not i could feed him, or for that matter is tetracycline could be used as well. It mentioned something about tetracycline but nothing about not using the two together, i went ahead and out the powder in and gave him some tetracycline feed, even though hes not eating it!
I supposed only time will tell.
Although, his eye is MUCH better, still puffy but not bleeding anymore.
