By baby, do you mean 1-2 inches without the tail...? If so you should let it go. They become stressed at that age and are way too young to be reared in captivity. If you don’t know what to feed it, then you probably don’t know the housing requirements as well. I’m not trying to be mean... It’s just that Westerns, especially babies need certain requirements like all lizards, and if unprepared can lead to fatality... I’m not saying don’t keep one, by all means, go catch an adult.

If you do decide to keep it, go buy some flightless fruit flies. They’re about $6.00 for a culture at Petco. That should last a couple weeks. You’d have to buy one every week though since the cultures die out after a couple weeks. You should have some more on hand.

What’s your tank size, substrate and what wattage bulb do you have for basking? Just asking because they need a basking spot to mimic what they do in the wild...

Baby fence lizards need to be reared with utmost care and need to be watched 24/7.

Just like a human baby, they need constant watching, to make sure things go alright.

Here are some good foods. Most of the food they love the most, you cannot buy.

#1)-- Jumping spiders. Jumping spiders (family Salticidae) are one of the most important prey items for the western fence lizard. Very difficult to catch these spiders, due to their powerful eyesight, and exceptional intelligence (for a spider).

http://images.whatsthatbug.com/images/metaphidippus.jpg If you live in southern california, these are fairly common.

Ive never seen a fence lizard pass one of those up. They have a soft body, and are usually quite fat. Excellent food.

other jumping spiders will work just fine. Just make sure the spider is small enough that it cant prey on the lizard.

#2)--- Sow bugs. Sow bugs are distant relatives of the familiar pill bug. For baby fence lizards, this is an extremely important food. They are found in humid spots. An easy way of capture is to dig a hole, fill it with water, put sliced potato inside, and cover with a rock. Only do this if you dont use pesticides in your yard. Pillbugs are less desirable.

the baby sow bugs and pillbugs are soft, and the babies gobble em up without fail.

#3)--- Termites--- Excellent for baby fence lizards. Hard to obtain without know-how. Check old damp wood, cardboard, and similar habitats. Dont feed them soldier termites, just workers.

Baby crickets, fruitflies (both adult and maggot, petstores sell flightless fruitflies) Maggots have better nutritional value than adults. Crickets are good because they have alot of action, triggering a strike.

Vary the diet, and give babies large tanks. Provide a soft substrate like wood chips, potting soil, or coconut fiber.

You also need the following: A rock for them to sit on, similar in color to the lizard, they get security when they feel they can camouflage themselves. Get a UVA/B light. If you are in southern california, heating lamps are only needed in winter and autumn. Also dont touch the baby, but DO interact with it. Get the lizard to associate you with food.

When smaller, they need alot of food to grow, due to their insane metabolism.

UV lights can be obtained at any pet store.

Get a spray pump (buy one, dont use an old one) so you can mist the tank. The tyke will love ya for it, but dont use tap water. Lots of hard minerals that can cause bone disorders.

Treat it like its your human child.

Pinhead crickets. I have a tiny hatchling I rescued from the cats, and he is so little he can only eat the tiniest bugs. I had a batch of pinheads hatch out, so I put this lizard in a small sterilite container with a few dozen pinheads, and a little food and water crystals (or you could use a raw carrot for moisture) for the pinheads. He got right down to business and stuffed his belly. Tonight I will put him back in the tank I’ve set up for him. Feeding him in the tank was not an option, as the pinheads would just go hide in the substrate and be hard to find. At first he was a little alarmed about being put in the sterilite container, but then he saw the food walking around, and the rest is history.
