I do know that when they are with a male that is sexually mature (5-6weeks) they will be much more receptive and actually raise their tail to allow mating. You didn’t say how old yours were ...If the male is just showing his package they are about 5-6 weeks maybe 4. Still quite young and maybe just practicing, but soon enough it will happen. I leave my male with 2 females ...for about 10 days as long as I see him mating her multiple times and she is receptive I am sure I can expect babies ....it takes about 30 days for the female to produce young. At about 25-27 days I can see teats on the momma and I seperate her to a nice stress free clean cage and give her a small cardboard box to make a nest in with my old t shirts torn up ...they are lint free and will not cause the babies to choke on fibers ...such as paper towels and care fresh will. Make sure you give the momma good protien as she developes ...good people food chicken works well. She will need lots of extra care after she gives birth and will be hungry for just about anything. Another source of good protien is peanut butter on some wheat bread ...mine love it ! They will eat just about anything and butternut squash is a favorite too, great for calcium! Feel free to ask any questions ...I have been breeding rats all year and now sell them too...FUN !! Chris |

They have all produced large litters and never cannibalized as of yet. The issue is the momma only has 12 teats...but she has 14 or 15 babies ...so there is a runt or 2. I lost a runt last week poor thing ... I eneded up feeding right away to a reptile. When momma has her babies she will be very protective and bite the hand that feeds her ...so watch out...I have to use tongs to get her feeding dish out and stuff like that...I have been bitten several times lately ...but it’s quick and not too painful ...just scares me !! and bleeds a little. She doesn’t hang on ... just a quick bite. LOL Cp |

If you let them know you are afraid of them...they will bite you. |

The more interaction you have, the less likely they should be to bite you. |

Your words are short and pointed ... almost authoratative... if that is your intention it is coming across loud and clear. Did I step on your toes or something?? Cp |

I would like to see pictures of your breeding facility. It sounds like quite an operation. I have thought about breeding but have never committed to doing so. It would be great to see your larger scale breeding project and a description of the maintenance routine. thanks |

. I have 18 large tubs going plus a 4x2x2 catch all for smalls and mediums...Sometimes I have over 200 rats...my GF says more. I just sold off 45 and probably still have so many that I can start freezing and retiring older breeders that only produce small litters ...but I get attached to some of the larger males / females and hate to see them go. But you can’t keep feeding them and go broke. A few special ones , maybe. I spend about 125-150.00 per month on rodent block and substrate to change the tubs. The insulated /heated and air conditioned shed with ceramic tile floor cost well over 1500.00 Still paying the materials off from my Home Depot account. I did most of the building myself but had help.
ONE SPECIAL GUY(ROCKY)
THIS WEEK LOTS OF LITTERS
MICE TOO
I have the hose and nozzles in place for about 99% self watering...have to get the 5 gallon buckets and valves ...then I can do away with the water bottles. Cp |
