 Need Help!

So I brought home a german shephard puppy today. She doesn’t seem to have worms but she’s extremely scrawny. I can feel her ribs up to her hip bones, she would show interest in food and take a couple of small bites like she was just weened off her mother. I need help to get her to a heathy weight and quick. I might have to start force feeding or feeding her with a syringe.

Please help!

She is a pretty :)
try and intice her with puppy milk (not human milk as it isnt good for them) mix it in with her water in her bowl so it isnt too rich for her and so it doesnt give her diahorrea as thats the last thing she needs and place puppy meat in her food dish try and not worry about her kibble at the moment, as she should find the meat more appealing
hopefully that helps but keep us updated!!

Even though they don’t seem to have worms they may still have them. When you take her to the vet to get her shots ask to have her dewormed. Until then she should be eating a good food with little to no fillers three times a day to help put some weight on her.

Thanks.
Well puppy milk didn’t work but she was won over with a mixture of steak and roast beef with her soft kibble. I’ve notice she tends to want to eat after every little nap she has and she’s has much more energy to play :]

You may want to switch to something that doesn’t have so many fillers but more nutrients, that will help in her coat and weght development tremendously.

Thats just another filler, it’s not good for her and has no nutritional value. You need to buy food that has little to no fillers and nutritional value.
Link Go to this site and read through the information, it can help you. Puppy chow and dog gravy are fillers, they are not good nor are they nutritional for your puppy. You need to step up her nutrition to get her to a healthy weight and to have a healthy coat. I would recommend large breed formula since she will be over 50 pounds as an adult. Large breed formula contains less protein and calcium so that your puppies bones don’t grow to fast and cause hip and joints problems. If you want a healthy dog you have to start out by making her a healthy puppy.

look for foods with no soy, wheat, or corn in the ingredients. also, stay away from anything with "meat meal" in it. if you can find it, i highly recommend orijen puppy food Link. my coworker is feeding this to her pit puppy, and he’s doing fantastic. other good foods to try are wellness and solid gold, and they’re a bit easier to find.

you’re vet is probably going to suggest you use science diet. in my opinion, there are much better dog foods out there, and from what i have heard and seen with dogs on science diet, and if given the option, i would never feed it to my dog. that’s my own personal opinion.

you can also try the raw diet, there are a couple of different brands to choose from commercially. it can also be used in conjunction with a dry dog food. if you’re still having trouble getting the little one to eat, you can try something like this.

good luck, and keep us posted on your progress!

"Nutrimax large breed puppy" has worked great for me. I had three puppies(now I have two) that I raised from 3 months old. I’ve always fed "nutrimax lage breed puppy" and theyre doing great.

Not only that, but my picky akita wouldn’t eat at all, then I switched her to this food and she likes it.

Rubberducky273,
My aunt has used sciece diet with her Great Danes for years. If she uses anything else Shadows coat goes from pretty, sleek black to dull and brown. When she got Joker, he had a yellow coat with brown markings from being fed poor quality food, when he was switched to science diet his coat turned white with black makings, he was extreamly over weight and could not breath properly. After he started eating the food, it not only gave him more energy to run and play but it helped him lose and maintain a healthy weight. Science diet is not at all a bad food, true there are better foods, but there are worse. The reason it is number one vet recommended is because it actually is a good food, just because you in you "opinion" don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s not a good food. Zoe was being fed Bill Jack by her breeder when I got her, she was underweight, had a very dull coat, and her teeth didn’t llok the way a 6 week old puppies teeth should look. I put her on science diet for large breed puppies, she has put on and kept on a healthy weight, has healthy teeth, and a beautiful sleek coat. She’s on eukanuba for rottweilers now because I like having something that was specifically designed for my breed. If this changes her coat, teeth or weight I can gaurentee you that she’ll be right back on science diet because thats that brand I trust.

Hills Science didn’t win the #1 veterinary recommended brand for nothing. If your food is so much better, why isn’t it the #1 recommended brand? Why isn’t it used at all the rescues? They are the same price, I’ve actually seen your brand cheaper. Because you put common belief that dogs shouldn’t have soy, wheat or corn in their food doesn’t mean they should, those things are actually good for them, it’s the amount that is in the dog food that is bad for them. If you look, science diet actually has other stuff in the food besides some of those things, like cranberries. It is a fact that dogs are scavengers, some of the things they eat aren’t good for them. Science diet isn’t one. In all actuallity nutrimax large breed puppy formula isn’t any better either. But it works for ammaratsu. I am currently learning about pet foods and pet diets in my vet tech course. Science diet is far better then some of the other brands.

If you really want to try something good, LinkTry that.

i don’t mean to sound over-judgemental about a brand of dog food that is successfully and widely used. and you’re right, science diet is not a bad dog food. in fact, i was the one who introduced it to my mom because our vet recommended it. she started feeding it to her dogs: 3 non-related chihuahuas, a boxer mix and a chow mix. the chihuahuas all lost weight, the boxer mix also lost weight and ended up losing hair and she showed signs of allergies, although i assume that was an allergy to an ingredient in the food rather than the food itself. the chow however, stayed the same as he always had been and his previous problem with diarrhea cleared up. my mom is now feeding the dogs eukanuba new zealand venison with much better success. my aunt also switched her mixed breed from science diet to purina for similar reasons, and my cousin did the same with her schnauzer, both instances of which happened before i had my experience with science diet.

i have seen dogs that are fed exclusively science diet come into our shop with bad skin, icky eyes, sparse hair, and sometimes even under weight. i have also seen dogs that have none of those problems and are perfectly healthy, also fed on science diet. when some of those customers have listened to us and switched their foods, we more often then not see those dogs visibly looking healthier over time.
take for instance a bulldog named ceasar that has been coming to us for a couple of months now. the first time his owner brought him to us he was patchy with bright red rashes all over and terrible gas. we recommended a change in food, and he’s now feeding him on wellness simple foods solutions. the difference is outstanding. his hair is much thicker, with the patchiness receding weekly. although he still breaks out in the occasional rash, his skin is no longer inflamed or sensitive to the touch. still gassy like most bulldogs, although not nearly as nauseating.

i have heard from quite a few different sources, one being a vet herself, that vets get certain deals by carrying science diet. and just because a company doesn’t have an enormous marketing budget to promote their product doesn’t mean its not a superior food. companies start off making money by offering a good product. once they start getting more popular, and they gain that customer trust, they find ways to cut corners so they can make more money by spending less in production.

My vet, A widley known vet, Dr. Gary Riggs, doesn’t carry the brand, doesn’t sponser it and uses it with his own dogs recommends it. He doesn’t get paid. I work at an emergency veterinary clinic. I see alot worse problems from different foods. The food depends on the dog. My mom feeds her dog and has fed him purina dog chow for 11 years now, hershy won’t eat anything else and if he does it makes him sick. I prefer my dogs to be on better foods, but thats what works for her. I have seen science diet not work for other dogs, but alot less then not. I prefer science diet because it has made vast improvements on my dogs coats and health, where other foods make it worse. I lie my eukanaba rottweiler because it’s designed for her breed specifically. If that doesn’t work she’s going right back to science diet. If you want to complain about a food brand, complain about the dollar store brands. I had a dog come into the clinic throwing up repeatedly and having seizures because of the dollar store brand food.

a rant? that’s not a random post in a forum.. i just thought it was an interesting website created by someone with formal education on the subject.
Link

i apologize to Osake for hijaking their thread. the point i was originally trying to make was that just because your vet might recommend science diet, and tell you that its the #1 vet recommended food, doesn’t necessarily make it the best food out there. i didn’t mean to make it sound like i was saying "don’t feed this to your dog ever EVER". just educate yourself on the other options. and like LizaB2008, said the eukanuba breed specific food would probably be a good one for a pup like yours, since that way you can be sure your little one is getting all the right nutrition.

LizaB2008, does the breed specific food come in puppy and adult formulas?

If i may say on this food topic that yes there are good foods and rubbish foods! I personally am not a fan of Science plan/diet nor Eukanuba shearly because i have never had good outcomes with them! Liza uses Eukanuba Rottweiler for Zoe when i had my Nelly i tried her on it it gave her diahorrea, vomiting and skin heat rashes so i changed her to Royal Canin Rottweiler an she had the exact same outcome as Lizas Zoe on the ER - different brand different dog same breed!
I feed my Pitbull Milla on Royal Canin Boxer junior until she is 12months then she will be on Royal Canin Bulldog - both Boxer and Bulldog are recommended for Bully breeds. I swear by Royal Canin as all my dogs i have owned have never shown any problems on it.

My parents they have a chocolate Labrador. Cassie is fed on Pedigree dry kibble as that diesnt bring her out in rash, she diesnt looses her coat, yeas she puts weight on evan with diet food but as she has bad hip dysplacia she cant have long walks her hip and weight problem is due to bad breeding! Cassie has been on Royal Canin Labrador, Eukanuba, Bakers but all have been horrendus for her and Science diet/plan has been the worst of them all!!

So all i am trying to say and to close the rant on the dog food topic is that some people do feed there dog cheap nasty stuff so they have extra in there pocket but some feed there dog cheap stuff as thats what works well for there pooch.

Peace!

What I do with the eukanuba rottweiler mix is mix it in with a can of the eukanuba large breed puppy formula. Technically it’s for 1+, thats because it doesn’t have DHA and all that stuff that the puppy needs which is why I mix about half a can of the wet large breed puppy food in per feeding.

that’s good to know, i really like the idea of breed specific foods, but i kind of doubt shiba inus are high on the list for eukanuba to make a specific food for. i wonder if they plan to make a wider variety of that line, i’m sure a Spitz-breed food would be a good seller.

i may just have to do that. shibas are starting to get a lot more popular in the US, and every shiba owner i know would love to have a breed specific food for our breed, since they’re so prone to food allergies and need a fishier diet than a lot of dogs. i may just email them tonight, thanks for the tip.

Your welcome, there is also a natural food I have seen for wolf hybrids and such, but it’s very pricey. I’ll have to see what it’s called and let you know.
