 Feeding a Crayfish

Hey everyone

i work at a nature perserve and one of the camp groups caught a impressive crayfish...the policy is catch, keep to learn about (2-3 weeks) and release where found. Now i set it up in a tank with rocks/gravel on the bottom with a area so it can come fully out of the water if it wants, a plant, a rock cave, a filter and some guppies.

I was curious as to what else i could feed it?

its only been 3 days and i believe its eatten a few fish. the kids love to watch it and its quite willing to put on a show for them!

any input would be great

Thanks!

 Feeding a Crayfish

Hello, I would be glad to help! Let me tell you that Crayfish will eat ANYTHING. I use to keep them and i fed them shrimp pellets. You can feed them fish food, pieces (small) pieces or meat raw or cooked, almost any thing that sinks and is edible. Feeding them is the easiest way to keep a crayfish!!!

You can get shrimp pellets ant youíre local pet store (or Fred Myers!) lol

 Feeding a Crayfish

I NEVER FEED one of my crayfish/lobster only i drop a few fish flakes in for the feeder goldfish and usaly he eats from 1-3 goldfish a night if he can catch them and for my other guy he’s a little clumsy i have to flick the goldfish on the head and then hand feed him but crayfish/lobster DO NOT NEED LAND but it does not hurt i think maby sometimes they like it becuse my lobster seems to climb out with the plants leading to the durface and he sits for like 1 minut and go back down into the water so idk...

like previous people stated, they will eat crayfish. they love earthworms, slugs, snails, etc. i even had some wax worms for my lizards and i dropped one in and he loved it. they do not have to have land. ive personally always made all my tanks all water. but make sure you have moving water with a filter.

 Feeding a Crayfish

Crayfish are omnivorous scavengers, feeding primarily on plants, algae and organic detritus. Crayfish do not often find sources of animal protein such as a dead fish, and such meals are very precious to them, aggressively defending such a meal against other scavengers.
But will crayfish actually kill and eat your fish? In an aquarium it is uncommon for crayfish to catch and eat healthy fish, though the odds on such an event depend on the size of aquarium, the number of fish in the aquarium, what species of crayfish is being kept, and even whether the crayfish is well fed or not. So while it is unlikely that a crayfish will catch your fish, there is a possibility, particularly where small or slow moving fish are concerned. Most of the time crayfish are seen eating a fish that fish was already dead or dying, and the crayfish was simply doing its natural duty of being a scavenger. Without knowing this, the aquarist might falsely accuse the crayfish of murder when he notices the crayfish chewing on the carcass!
