i only have one snake, but if i had two unless breeding, i would not house them together.

the possibility of a parasite outbreak, of stressing one another out, of getting into a fight, they are too great. for the life and health of the animal i would only house them seperatly.

my two cents.

my reasons not to co house

  • - if you feed at the smae time and one regurges you dont know which
    - if you mis sex one, you will get eggs and if they female is young she will possibly die
    - general stress
    - spread of paprasite
    - if young, they can be canabalistic
    - they compete for space
    - one may get frioghtened from the other one
    - mites
    - diseases
    - 2 males will fight
    - if one snake get out, you will most likly loose both
    - if one dies from a sort of infection of something, the other will most likly get it

it goes on and on, but ill let others add there opwn opionion

HOUSING SNAKES TOGETHER - - PLEASE READ

This could be one of the most commonly asked questions so this I think this thread is a good idea.

Look people...CAN snakes be housed together - yes. Many people do and report never having any problems. However, there have been reports of cannabalism, spreading illness, and other complications.

I think the issue is SHOULD they be housed together and the clear answer there is NO! The reasons in the above post are a great list. My big reason is this...they are not social animals and do not like being around others. Think about it, when have you seen a group of snakes? A flock of parrots, a heard of buffalo, a school of fish, a colony of ants, a gaggle of geese, a pride of lions, a pack of wolves...but no groups of snakes. Ya know why? They are just not social creatures. Housing them together puts them in a fundamentally abnormal situation and they get stressed. They have no instinct on how to be social and get stressed out from dominance issues.

Truthfully this antisocial trait is one of the reasons I like snakes. If I were to leave my dogs, cat, a bird, or pretty much any other mamal alone for days or weeks they would get lonely and stressed from being alone. Snakes are the opposite. They don’t care if I never pay them attention (except for feeding and cleaning of course) and they can actually get stressed out from too much attention.

Basically what I am saying is that I am against housing snakes together. I personally feel that it is unhealthy for the snake.

HOUSING SNAKES TOGETHER - - PLEASE READ

Nightmare, I am not arguin but I am just going to kind of talk about the otherside of your reasons since i am one of those people who house cornsnakes together (no more than two per cage)...

If you feed at the same time and one regurges you should know which one it is because the lump will no longer be there..if you can’t see the lump after your snakes eats that means you aren’t feeding him/her the correct size meal anyway...also to avoid this problem you can /should feed them on different days.

I agree with this she may die...But if you feed them correctly if they are housed as babies to adults they will grow up at the same rate and have eggs at the right time... Alot of egg bound females become that way because some snake owners don’t realize that if you don’t know anything about snakes anyway you are bound to have problems. Also when you feed your snakes the proper diet to their size on a good feeding schedule the to-be mom can easily pass all the eggs. she will get skinny but that’s normal. also if you (meaning anyone not you nightmare know anything about corn snakes which we all do..you know for a female corn to pass eggs without a problem she has to have a proper hide for it. many mother cornsnakes (since they are good egg layers) won’t just lay eggs anywhere she doesnt feel is safe thus causing her to keep the eggs inside her and being egg bound.

I won’t talk about the general stress because even though i house my snakes together they don’t show signs..However i will admit; all because no signs are there doesn’t mean they aren’t stressed.

I’m not sure exactly how parasites can be spread from snake to snake if the snake is kept clean as possible

Cannibalism only happens when young aren’t fed approciate quantities of meals to keep them full and they revert to survival of the fittest. IMO if you keep two hatchlings in the same cage feed them both each feeding (once a week) two pinkies minium no more than 3....This will gaurenteed (because I do it) keep them full and you won’t have to worry about cannibalism

I am not sure how competting for space looks because my tank is a 55 gal i keep to adults in there and usually when one goes to one part of the cage the other one follows seems like they like to be with each other ..( I know snakes don’t have that emotional capabilities but i wasnt sure how to word it) also i have aspen for bedding so my snakes dig into parts of the bedding and just lay there.

Mites (refer back to my parasite response)

2 fighting males...This should only happen around breeding season so...what i say to this is that if you are going to house snakes together you NEED to have an extra tank available.

If any of your snakes get loose its your fault for not having the proper enclosure safetly latched

and the spreading of infection..this is why regardless of if you house them together or not you need to do your own routine body inspection then if you see problems get a vet check up asap..just incase it can be spread by being airborne..

All and all night and my self are both right..but one thing her and i can agree on is..if you dont have extra tanks when needed NEVER even think about housing snakes together...

bump! I have been busy and so have not been on the boards much lately, but I can see that this argumrnt is still prevelant! I PERSONALLY think that it is a decision that the owner must make on his or her own and, though I see the positive and negative sides to both housing together and not housing together, I still think that it is all a matter of how much you are willing to risk the health and saftey of your snakes.
Something that my cousin has done in the past with her Corns when a housing crisis came up (She was cleaning out the smallest of her two tanks, a 20 gallon for her 5 month old corn Smithers, and she used realyl hot water to wash it with, but didn’t give the glass a chance to cool before rinsing with slightly cooler water and CRACK! there was a gigantic crack running all the way across the front and when we tried to move it another formed and a giant chunck fo glass flew out of the front pane) was she divided a 55 gallon tank in two lengthwise down the middle (so that there were temp gradients for both animals) with a piece of plexiglass. The snakes didn’t seem to notice, or care that the other was visible on the other side of the glass so I guess this type of housiing together is a happy medium for those that don’t want to house directly, but still want the relative conveniece of only having one tank.
    There, I’ve said my piece...

i think if housing together it just has to be done appropriately. as long as the tank is big enough so they dont have to be with each other all the time then it is not a problem.

    my check list
-snakes have many hides in cool and hot end of the tank
    - the enclosure is big enough to support all these hides, water bowls, branches and fake plants and still leave enough room for them to roam the tank.
-snakes are roughly the same size and the exact same breed
-more then one water bowl so they can soak seperately if they wish
-the new snake is quarentined for 6 weeks to make sure they are in good health before they are introduced in to the enclosure
-a seperate tub is available to seperate during feeding day with all required husbandry
    - and i would only house breeding pairs together. i here males can fight at breeding season so i would not take the risk although some people have done this successfully.

I know the pros and cons. But for 3.5 years I have housed 2 BP together successfully. They are both fat and healthy and according to the vet, in perfect health. I have multiple hides in a 40 breeder, 2 water sources and 2 heat sources. I feed separately and know the size of each ones poo. (one is male and one female, I do not cool to encourage breeding). Grace, the male, and Rose, the female, seem to enjoy each others company. Rose even seems to get hyper if Grace is taken out of the tank for too long. I let them get out one time due to my own stupidity and do you know what, 3 hours later I found them TOGETHER, behind a radiator across the room. So much for snakes not being social. They each stick their heads out of their hide every morning when I go to work ( I work at home) to "say high" and get a drink and then go back inside. They come out when I change their water at noon and when my shift as a transcriptionist is up, they seem to know it and stick their heads out to say see you in a few hours at bedtime mom. Everyone tells me what I do with Grace and Rose is wrong and it can’t work but yet it does. I have a beautiful 5’ female and a 4’ male, both whom are healthy and magnificant looking. I treat them like my children. I hold them every day, I pet them, rub their heads and chins which they love and Grace loves to have his tail pulled. Maybe it is because I started doing all of this before I found out it wasn’t suppose to work that it does work for me. All I know is I have a special relationship with Grace and Rose and they with me. I am just thankful for it and don’t question it.
