 Is this a corn snake?

Can you guys tell me if this is a corn snake? I want to be sure it’s not a rattler because it was found in my back yard.

Thanks,
Obliena (newbie)

Well thank goodness. It looks like a rattler with that design on it’s back. How do you tell the difference?

Thanks

Look at the head and how it is rounded / oval at the nose/chin and blends smoothly into the body/neck
See the eyes, the pupils are round. Notice the small smooth scales.

A rattler will have an enlarged diamond shaped head that does not blend smoothly with the body/neck...almost like a spear head or arrow head. The pupils will be like a cat ...vertical slits. The scales will be very coarse and heavily overlapped...(keeled scales)

Thanks for the reply and the informative link. I always knew the rattlers had a diamond shaped head but didn’t know it was so pronounced. ~O

Something about that picture makes me think it isn’t a Corn, but rather a Rat Snake. Either way, it’s completely harmless, just like a Corn.

That would be a baby Rat Snake. There are many subspecies depending on your location but it looks like a Gray Rat. I take it you live in the South East?

Juvenile black rat snake. It will get darker as it gets older.
