Corn snakes spend the VAST majority of their time under ground or under debris. Instincts have nothing to do with it, especially if it is a captive bred animal. Once you place your corn in a cage you have totally removed instincts from the equation. |

"once you put the animal in the cage you have completely taken its instincts out of the question" is correct its an animal, part of nature its not created by man just because someone bred it in captivity. A baby corn or rat snake, you dont teach them to eat mice, you put it in front of them their instincts tells them to eat it and they do. its true that the more bloodline they have in captive bred snakes... the less they use instincts like climbing and swimming.. but humans will never take away all their instincts... lol good luck feeding a snake that is only spoon fed lol I think it is little harsh the way you worded it that humans just lock them in cages and give them a minimal of what they can have. To original poster: its true you dont have to put a climbing area in... but at night it might be fun for you to watch them climb around. Also I some times put their mice in the trees so its more like a hunt. Good Luck! |

As humans keeping corn snakes we DO lock them up in cages and give them the minimal that they need. In fact we give them what WE think they need and force them to conform to our ways and perceptions. How are they given more than the minimum in a 20, 30 or even 55 gallon tank as opposed to what is given them in nature..........but then again most captive born corns would never make it in nature wich brings me back to my original statement.....we have removed instincts from the equation. Your analogy of if it’s hungary it will eat..............thats a physiological rsponse to a stimulus not an instictual behavior. Instinct tells them where to brumate, where to find water, how to use barametric measure to determine wether or not stay in a hiding place or venture out, how to not crawl around when you have a clear sky and a full moon because you are more easily seen by predetors. These are instincts and this is taken from the equation when kept in cages. |

Quote: thank you for stating your side of the arguement clearly. Everything you are saying makes perfect since, And im not saying its wrong as much as the fact that I prefer to put trees and vines in their cages lol
Thankyou Wisema for the posts Absolutely!! Please do put climbing branches in the cage, especially if yor snake does use them. It adds to the pleasure of watching him out and about. I have plans for a large naturalistic display myself that will utilize branches as well. It will also have to utilize a heat lamp above the branches because a UTH just wouldn’t work in it. During the cold months the snake will back in a rack system where the temp is easier to control. |
