Combating mold in a tub set up?
I took out all the dampened and molding aspen bedding out (it was only molding on the side without the heat pad), wiped the sides and bottom of the bin with water and bleach and then washed anything that had been touched by the mold with a bleach and hot water solution. I had been using a shoe box as one of the hides for my male, but that was moldy as well so I had to throw it away and replace it with a makeshift plastic tupperware hide until I can get a rock one. Then I drilled two more rows of holes in each side of the viv, one higher and one lower than the originals (I previously only had 2 rows right through the middle of the sides) and I added a crap load of bigger holes to the lid, (clustering them more closely over where the water dish sits underneath it). I also moved both bins (they are stacked one on top of the other) about 1 foot away from the wall (it’s insulation covered with vapor plastic, I live in a basement) incase that was causing the moisture to build up. The mold was only growing along that side of the bins so I thought maybe the vapor plastic was preventing the moisture from totally escapeing the vivs. Would you reccomend that I do anything else to the bins to help prevent mold from forming again? The humidtiy was at 58%, but I will give it a day or two before I post the new humidity level. How do you keep a high humidity viv free of mold? I ask because I am going to be getting a brazillian rainbow boa near the end of summer and It will need to be in a tub because it requires a very high humidity, much higher than the 50-60 a corn needs. Thanks in advance. |

Actually - the recommended humidity level for Corns is 40%-50%. Not sure why the mold problem... Many BP keepers (which have the humidity requirement of 50%-60%) use tubs, and I never see them saying anything about mold... *may want to post in the BP forum and ask there :o) Humidity in the summer, depending on the region you live, is usually higher... could be a factor... *shrug* ... do more frequent cleaning? Also, what type of substrate are you using? Maybe try one that holds less humidity... Paper towels or news paper is fairly common with tub use. |

Oh okay thanks for telling me. I knew that 40% was too low, but I was never quite sureon a max... I live in Midwestern Canada, where the average summer humidity is usually less than 40%, so I doubt that is the problem... And I am using Aspen shreds. I know that I should be using something else since Aspen is bad with moisture, but It was all I had when I set them up and I wasn’t going to let a large bag of it go to waste because there might be a chance of it molding. I can see now that more holes has deffinitely helped out and I think that if things stay in the green for another few weeks, I’m home free as far as getting the right humidity level for both the snake and the bedding I’m using. But thank you veyr much for your help anyways! I appreciate it! |
