I guess it depends why they’re doing it, and on your feelings about this ethical issue. I don’t have a problem with embryos being used for research - that’s just my personal opinion; I think we all feel that medical advances are important and these are not possible without research. So for potential prevention of suffering of a human being or an animal, I don’t have a problem with embryos being used for research. If this is the actual creation of a cloned dog, like Dolly the cloned sheep, in itself that is not cruel, as long as the animal is well treated. It’s all very well to say we don’t like things like this which may seem creepy, but this is where the future lies. If two people carry the cystic fibrosis gene and want to be sure of having a child without cystic fibrosis, gene therapy is necessary, and for this research is necessary in order to have a proper understanding. Cloning could be very important in the future in order to make new tissues for people who have Parkinson’s or the like. So if it involves little experiments like this, I can’t see that that is a problem - the animal won’t suffer from having the same genes as the animal it was cloned from. It may well have a happy life. Who knows? The mystery of life and death is not that simple.
