 New Corn!!!

Hey guys,

I got a new Corn Snake. A pet store was closing and I got lucky to take him home. He is a male, about five years old they said.

I’ve had him since last thursday, when he was fed. Tonight was my first time feeding this guy. I fed the first mouse (f/t) and he was fine. Ate it with no problems. I put in a second one, but he decided he didn’t want it. Well, I reached in to get the snake to take back to his enclosure and he struck at me. Hissed and hit my hand with his nose. I guess I wasn’t supposed to reach in there like that, huh? lol I know not to handle him for 24 to 48 hours, but I wanted to get him back to his enclosure. What is the best way to do this. I fed him in a 75 quart sterilite container and he is in a 40 breeder, so it was kind of hard just turning the container to let him back into his home. lol

Anyway, I just totally love him. He is quite sweet.

Edel

My snakes get a little edgy when i offer them a second meal. so i think thats normal.

Haha. Yeah, that’s totally normal. I have the most gentle corn snake ever and she did the same thing once. It’s only because they are in the hunting/eating mode. What i do is feed my corn in something smaller than her cage and then after feeding I set the container she ate in, down in the cage and let her crawl out. Corn snakes don’t need a lot of room for feeding. Otherwise, when you first pick her up after feeding, put a magazine or something behind its head. After it is in your hands you shouldn’t have any problems.

hope this helps.

Awesome! Very beautiful snake. I’ve got an amel and hope he gets that big soon!

As for the strike... that was likely just part of the feeding response. I have a snake (Blue Beauty) that, if I feed her in a different container, I wait until she’s got all but the tail of the mouse down and then I carefully lift her and put her back in her enclosure. I know some may not like this, but her feeding response lasts so long that she could be in the other container ALL NIGHT! LOL. She’s about 3.5 feet long now, so her bite is starting to get nasty. OUCH!

Congrats!
