 Digging

I woke up today to find my Bud digging, she has been digging all day now showing some lovely terquoise colours.

As her enclosure is in the main room of the hse i have covered the cage with a cover and left a little peep hole for me. My daughter is bard from going near her. I havent sprayed her cage yet as i dont want to disturb her.

Is this a fertile clutch? It is so exciting! Make sure the sand is moist enough to not collapse on her.

not fertile, she has never been nr another cham. She has been off her food for about a week. I managed to get her to eat curly winged flies for 3days in a row now she has been drinking plenty. She has been showing a lot of yellow colours and being VERY grumpy!! so i put the sand in there 2 days ago

She is still digging she has been digging for 8hrs now

dont worry she can go weeks with out food , just not water so make sure you water her very good and keep her well hydrated and she will complete her mission of laying eggs just make sure not to spook her as she might think your a predator out to get her and she will hold her eggs and become egg bound but dont worry about the eating thing soon as shes done laying her eggs she will need a good feeding of say 20 or so crickets that are dusted to the max to get her nutrients and minerals a jump start after laying all those eggs and taking so much out of her so you just replenish her by giving her a good dusting, oh and also they will dig a few test holes to make sure cause they need that perfect spot lol but it can take up to 2 or 3 days of just test holes but put a towel around her cage and just peek in from time to time so you dont spook her but soon as shes done laying those eggs get her alot of water sit there and give her as much as she will take in 20 to 25 min period no longer , and give her a good dose of crickets and she should be fine and back to normal for you

thankyou all!!!

she had 51eggs last night (still need to look properly in sand) i got her drinking but she hasn’t eaten yet :-S i’ve put some crickets in there and kept the cover over the cage to keep her calm, she’ll get pampered for a bit lol.

I’ve posted some pics in a new thread, sorry after i done it i should have posted it in here. she had 51eggs in total in the pics is 1 of the biggest and smallest egg against a ruler.

When i thought she was digging again may she was covering them up?????

how many eggs is average for their first lay.

they can lay anywheres from 20 to 100 eggs in a clutch , just depends on the amount of intake (food) the animal is geting and how much you dust its feeders, even heat all depends on how many eggs your female is going to lay but id say 30 to 60 eggs is average for veiled chameleons , but start puting her on a diet of about 8 crickets a day with sundays off or wat ever day works best for you and dont feed her any more then 8 dont worry she will be fine off 8 , i use this methode and my female only layed eggs into the 40s and then she droped to about 33 to 35 eggs after and its soo much easier on your female for her to lay less because she gets all stressed from laying and it shortins there life span by making all those eggs so do the diet and you wont have so many next time lol

she’ll think i’m 1 mean mummy cutting her food down lol

I’ll start that as soon as she puts some weight on as she looks awful atm poor girl! All her ribs are showing and everything :( but she started eating again this evening and ate 6 crickets, first proper feed in weeks, as all she was eating was the odd wax worm and curly winged flies, she refuesed crickets, locust and mealworms, but with that many eggs in her there was no room for food.

I normaly feed her on med locust as she prefers them to crickets so should i just feed her 6 a day with 1 day off?

my poor baby looks so drained, I remember that feeling well after having my daughter at least she aint got the sleepless nights and the worry of what they are upto for 18yrs lol

lol oh no ahaha in the long run she will live longer feeding her less , because she wont produce as many eggs resulting in less stress on her body meaning she will live longer so dont worry about feeding less, they dont even get what we give them in the wild not even close,

but you can mix her intake up of both locusts and crickets the more varied diet your cham has the healthier your cham is and feed 8 feeders not 6 , 6 is just not enough or are these locusts huge like 2 inches+?? if they are 6 will be fine lol good luck with your female and she should live a long and happy life with you
