 Help please!

I’m a fairly new owner and new to the veiled chameleon species. About two to three months ago i went to the local pets store and brought two baby veiled (Pet store said they where about 2 months old) chameleons with a 1’ X 2’ X 2’ 6" screen enclosure along with the recommended basking lights, UV lights, droppers, and fake foliage etc... After i brought my babies and the equipment needed to thrive as per my local pet store, i did some research and found that they did not know what they where talking about. (Note: they told me that they could be housed together and a hole lot of other tips that were not common with the forums.) So i stop asking for there advice.

Well in the small enclosure i read that it was safe for them to be kept together until 3 months. They really thrived , i was feeding them small crickets and adding Zoo Mead’s RECEPTIVITY Reptile vitamin w/ D3. A constant drip system with misting 3-4 times a day One basking light and one UV light. The foliage was fake. It’s seemed like everthing was going perfect until the male started out growing the female by a land slide. Then i noticed he was picking on her and she was not eating. In that time period the male shed ed any where between 4-6 times and the female had only sheded once. So i began to worry and found some forums and realized they had to be moved apart.

So i went on the internet and bought a 2’ X 2’ X 4’ screen enclosure and set it up like the original cage, with just one more basking area. At this point i seperated them, placing the male in the larger cage. From the first minute i seperted them, they both seemed to love it, the male had much more room to navigate because he was roughly three time bigger then the female and a new area to explore whilethe female became more active and began to wonder more around her cage instsead of being cofined to the opposite side of the male (he was really dominating her prior to the speration). And it seemed to me that everything was going well.

So i went on vacation early this week, leaving them in the care of my family, and my male chameleon died today. I dont know what went wrong but i would like to figure it out. I have a bunch of questions that hopefully some can answer for me, My female chamaeleon is still alive and i dont want to lose her.

1. I had brought larger crikets than i was buying for the male cuase i thought he had grown enough to jump up in size. I was away for 5 days and wasnt seeing his eating habit. Do you think he would die of starvation?

2. I noticed that they left crickets inside the cage, do the bite of the cricket cause infections.

3. They told me they continued the misting and drip systems while i was gone but when i got home and i noticed he was weak (Trembling in the limbs) i gave him water and he would drink alot, do you think he dehydrated?

4. he was so weak that he fell from the top about 4’ high, could the fall have hurt him? He was very cold when i picked him up.

5. Do you think moving him into such a large cage so soon was good or bad for him.

6. I had a big basking light in the bigger cage, reletively much stronger than the one in the small cage, do you think i could of fried him?

7. Does having no real foilage affect them?

8. i just pulled the feamle out and it seems like shees bleading from her rear end. wahts going on. please help see pictures hurry......

This could be a problum that i had with my veiled.is there anything sticking out of her end if there is she could be haveing a reptil prolasp which is caused by parsites.i would take her to a vet just see if every thing is all right because houseing them togauther can cause parsites because you dont know if the chameleons you got are captive breed or wild caught. Also the male’s symtoms look like a case of MBD.also give more info temps, humdity, age, diet habits, all that. the best thing would be to take the female to a vet ASAP.

 Help please!

So they were about 5 months old? And ALL of the problems started only when you were on vacation?
Do you have Instant Messenger of some kind? I would be happy to help you out...
Did you know your temps? Was there any kind of plastic or glass between the UVb and the cage?
You separted them in good time, and no one is going to starve to death at 5 months in few days. Were there eyes sunken in? Was there anyone that could have been "harrassing" them while you were gone? Overhandling them in your absence?

Zoo Mead’s RECEPTIVITY Reptile vitamin w/ D3-this concerns me also-this is not something I have even heard of but not something for everyday use.
Too much supplementation is as bad if not worse then under. And your female probably does need to see a Vet. Prolapses can happen without the presence of parasites.

Julirs, five months is about right, and yes, before I left they looked great. But before I left i had bought much larger crickets, do you think that he ate them and just could not digest them, is that possible?

Well its funny you ask about the temp., because the vet told me i must know what the temp. & Hum. is, before i visited her on Monday. The temp at the Highest point is about 82 degrees in the middle 75-78 degrees and the bottom 72 degrees. Would you happen to have an idea on where to buy a cheap barometer? Oh yeah, No plastic or glass directly over the wire mesh. Is that OK?

Good relief on the starvation part, would of felt really bad.... The eyes where sunken in on Fred and he felt very cold, was weak in the legs, and could not hold on or walk. He was lying and rolling on the ground.

As far as harassing it could not of happened, I have many pets. A boa, two turtles, a uramastic, two chameleons, two cats, and two dogs. So my family is used to handling and caring for animals and they would not removed them from there cages cause they didn’t like to touch them, they only like look at them. They watered and fed them for me. I hope...

Well thanks for the help! I don’t have any instant messengers but my email address is . Would love the Help!

It could be possible but unlikely that he fell and injured himself fatally. Your temps are not too far off, at 5 months I would go no higher than 90 degrees. If you go to my website that is listed under my profile here there is a most excellent link to a Veiled Chameleon care sheet that describes care for female Veileds and supplementing. You can get a cheap digital thermometer at Petsmart. That is good news on your female. I sent you a message with my email address.

Your male chamelon fred maybe had some parasites do you know if he was captive breed or wild caught?
And were he couldnt hold on to anything and eyes sunken is probably MBD or because he fell so far.
