IMO, a 10 gallon tank will hold only one adult pygmy. you can get away with having two in a 10 but for their long term health i wouldnt risk it.

i would keep a pair in something no less then 20 gallons.

 Pygmy Chameleon questions?

if you go with a 20 gal for a pair, pack it full of plants.. preferably live if you have a green thumb.

lots of sturdy vining plants live pylodendron, some ficus’ and pothos and some smaller "tree" like plants such as mini palm make great viv plants.

as for substrate, i would use either organic potting soil, coco fiber or peat moss mixed with some orchid bark for drainage. i would not mix sand into the substrate. over time it may result in the pygmy’s having a blockage. and that can be fatal.

they do NOT need a heat rock.. room temps are fine if they are in the mid 70’s range.

also, make sure to get a CB animal if you can and avoid WC altogether. they are a pain to acclimate.

here is a link to my pygmy site for you:

good luck !!

The section on Pygmy’s is in the left hand sidebar on her site. "Pygmeleons". That’s the info you need. Check Julirs’s profile again, click the link to her site and look for "Pygmeleons".

Also I saw your other post about feeding ... a cham cannot survive on fruit alone. If you don’t have regular access to suitable insect feeders then perhaps a cham of any species isn’t the best choice for you.

 Pygmy Chameleon questions?

well i am only going to get one and i have a 10 gallon tankand i found the pygmy things wat if i just get fake plants,is it bad to not get real plants? And so peat moss with some orchid bark? and i got the part with no heat needed,bc i have a scorpion and its normal temp with out the heat which is 73 degrees so the heat is good.

 Pygmy Chameleon questions?

cb= captive bred
wc = wild caught.

wild caught pygmy’s have large parasitic loads that can be difficult to treat. they can succumb very easily in a matter of hours or days if not quarantined properly.

thats not to say that Cb pygmy’s dont have parasites. but raised in an environment where they are not exposed to WC chameleons and do not share any food items or tank decorations, the parasitic load is far less. which makes them easier to acclimate.

good luck with your soon to be pygmy and post pics when you get him/her!

 Pygmy Chameleon questions?

yes, you can gather sticks from outside.

just make sure that they are not the type that leach any sort of poisons or saps. and also that they are collected from pesticide free areas.

you can bake them in a standard oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees to rid them of any potentially harmful bugs. ( make sure that you wet down the sticks before placing them in the oven or they will catch fire ).

i would give them a light, yes. it can be a regular florescent light. i opt for both a uva/uvb light and an incandescent light.

it also doesnt have to be very bright.

smaller thinner branches work better, but they are able to climb thicker one’s as well..

i give my pygmy’s large cork bark flats to climb around on... which they always take advantage of...

You really need real plants. Pothos works great, is hard to kill, makes vines for them to crawl on, and the real plants help hold up humidity. Fake plastic plants just don’t work well with pygmies. They can be tricky so you want to set up an environment as close to their natural one as possible.

just as Julirs stated, real plants work best.

pothos is an excellent suggestion as well as phyllodendrons.

if you dont have a green thumb, you would need to find other ways of keeping humidity consistent. which can be a little tricky..

You need a low % UVB light for them. A Zoomed Reptisun 2.0% fluorescent tube will work fine.
You can get an inexpensive fixture for the bulb at Walmart or Home Depot. I think the undercabinet type of fixture are a good size.

Make sure you leave the clear plastic panel OFF the fixture after you insert the bulb. UVB rays do not pass thru plastic or glass.

 Pygmy Chameleon questions?

there has been some debate on whether pygmy’s need UVB lighting.. i personally use it and so do a number of people..

however, i have also used just a regular florescent light over a tank with no ill effects...

pygmy’s dont need very bright light, as they dwell primarily on the forrest floor.. but for live plants, you would need a fairly decent wattage light..

good luck!
