Well, crap. I’m sorry to hear that. I knew he had an eye problem, but wasn’t aware he had parasites as well. You probably did the right thing so he wouldn’t linger on and on.

Avoid pet stores, my buddy bought two veileds from petco and both died of parasites. When you buy another one, look for reputable breeders online and pay the extra cost. Also make sure it’s captive born and not wild caught. Had some flying geckos that came in with a truckload of mites and other parasites. Ended up tossing 90 bucks plus the cost of meds out the window in 3 months because of that simple mistake. Also got those from petco, go figure.

Vicente, stop talking, go invest in goldfish or something. Maybe one of them will lay a golden egg for you.

I’m very sorry for your loss. Don’t rule out petstores though. Not all are bad, just use one you feel comfortable with.

Disregard Thoubmyp86’s advice, regardless of how knowledgeable the folk at pet stores are, they’re there for one thing only. To make money. Thus, they’ll improperly house, skimp on supplements, outright lie about the origins of the reptile. At least with a breeder, you can get a complete history of the reptile, and you pay about the same after shipping as you would from a pet store.

Petco: 2 month old veiled cham is 89.00

FLchams 2 month old veiled cham is 35.00 plus 50.00 shipping.

Mom and pop store: 2 month old veiled is 129.00 (because they got it from a reputable breeder in town LOL).

I’ll guarantee that mom an pop stores have even lower standards for their stock of reptiles. I know the store I picked up my female veiled had her in a 12 x 12 x 24 enclosure that was glass and no basking lights whatsoever. And that guy is known in my community as the expert on reptiles. The cham spent the entirety of the week it was in that store on the ground, and I spent 150 on her. Of course, she was an adult, but still.

Mike from FLchams has 7 years breeding experience, which means he has been with the cham it’s entire life and he knows who it’s parents are and more importantly, he is willing to pay the cost of proper care. In fact, I’m so impressed with the chameleon I got from him, that I fully intend to order some more from him just because of the quality. Most private breeders offer the basic requirements or will refer to another site that does for chams.

The Petco in my area doesn’t even offer screen cages, and I have heard them tell many customers that an adult veiled will live in a 29 high aquarium. Furthermore, petco.com doesn’t offer the proper equipment for chameleons. So I know for a fact that the petco in your area is not any better.

Just trust the advice of almost everybody on this forum, order from a well known breeder online, pet stores are just heartaches waiting to happen.

I have to agree with Evantor on this one, however i will say that SOME, as in a FEW people who work at petco are people like us who actually do know what we are talking about, but thats about one out of a 100. So i wouldnt trust them either.
