I really don’t think my cat has heart worm, but what are the symptoms just in case? He goes out a lot and is pretty active, but I’ve been busy and hasn’t been able to get him his vaccinations soooooo.

Hello!

Heartworms are a parasite that cats and dogs get from infected mosquitos. Cats are not a typical host for heartworms, however they can still become infected. Unlike dogs, testing for feline heartworms is not a routine blood test but normally a special request. When pets show signs of heartworms, its normally in the late and fatal stages of the disease. Signs can be trouble breathing, coughing, lethargy, and heart failure. Since there is no vaccine for Heartworms, prevention is key. For cats there is an awesome product called Revolution that protects from fleas, heartworms, ear mites, and round/hook worms (it is a prescription that you would have to get from your vet).
