Thanks.
I am fond of her - him - it.

It has a docile personality but underneath lies a bad temper if crossed.

I soaked him once to get some dead skin off.

He didn’t like it one bit.

Didn’t bite, but hissed like a steam engine and body slammed my arm. He made it very clear he wasn’t pleased.

Thanks.

I have a black Mexican King also. It was about 18" when I got it and now is about 30" long. I think they are good feeders and pretty docile.

Solid black snakes can be very attractive.

Wow. Those really are beautiful snakes. Do you know where I can get a black pine? Any info like what it eats, how big it gets, etc would be really appreciated, too. Thanks.

the scariest encounter with my black pine was trying to remove his unshed eye cap .just trying to hold his head still with one hand and working my way slowly and carefully to remove his dry skin , he was hissing , his tale was shaking and was trying very hard to get loose of my hand .
once i did it i forced him in the tank and ran away from the room and can hear him hiss from the kitchen , that was when he was about a year and half , now he is over 3 years old and over 5 foot long and just had a medium rat today and he is happy now.
peace

They’e great animals. I love black snakes and I love pines; I should probably just put aside my desire to get a black rat again (now that they’re illegal in this idiot state!) and get one of those guys instead.

JackAsp, are illegal to sell or illegal to posses? I live in VA and it is illegal to sell/give/trade black rats but it is not illegal to posses up to five individual black rats snakes as pets. I justr can’t breed and sell them.

So it’s legal to remove them from the wild but not to sell captive-bred offspring? Yeah, THAT makes sense.
Our law covers any possession whatsoever. If it lives in Ohio, even if it’s an albino, you’d better have paperwork AND a good lawyer if you plan on openly selling them. The law even applies to red-eared sliders, which aren’t even native to the state, but because there’s some established breeding populations the ODNR decided to count them as native.
I did, however, at the show this morning, see some baby white-sided black rats on sale, so at least some people are willing to jump through the legal hoops, and hopefully the state is finally looseining up a little on hardline enforcement. They should be focusing their effort on species that need it, not on ones that are both common in the wild AND usually captive-bred anyway!

I agree and at least her in VA we can sell any albino reptile or amphibian even if it’s a native species unless federally protected.

Tnlinca is wrong!!!!!! That is an albino. A leucistic has blue eyes w/black pupils. An albino is lacking in pigment, a luecistic is white!

Are you sure you know what you are doing? Stories like this worry me. I understand that a miss-treated snake would not get that size being abused, but you sound like you are scared of the animal. NEVER pick dry skin off of a snke, espcially the eye cap.

Bought it in New Jersey from a local pet shop which bought it as a young snake from some kid.

I paid I think about $50-$75 for it. The staff were afraid of it and wanted to get rid of it.

As you can see, it is quite docile.

According to Wright and Wright, they reach 6’.

I feed my frozen, thawed rats and jumbo chicken eggs.

Try www.kingsnake.com There are also breeders on the net, or you might just get lucky like me and find one in a local shop. Its amazing what you can find when you look around.

How come black rats are illegal in Ohio?

These state wildlife agencies are run by idiots. I guess it isn’t common in Ohio so they want to prevent collecting.

HABITAT destruction is FAR more destructive of populations than limited collecting for personal use.
But you don’t expect the politicians to limit construction - that would eat into ratables, besides the construction lobby pays lots of money to politicians.

Here in New Jersey its illegal to own a Corn Snake unless it is of a color variety that doesn’t look like a wild specimen. The fact is corns are at the northernmost range in New Jersey and probably were never very common here anyway. Again, there has been tremendous habitat loss here due to farmers being forced to sell out to developers because of economic reasons.

Best way to deal with dead skin is soaking the critter in water until the dead skin gets soft.

Works every time for me.

NICE !!!

I have an albino male , I believe it to be a bull snake , but I look at the heavy keeled scales and wonder if it might be a pine...especially now seeing yours???

I traded it for some rodents , which I raise to feed numerous snakes. He is a hisser too ...omg like you said, into the other room you can hear it.....lol

Starting to raise rabbits for the retic & boa and when I lose some pre maturely he gets the fuzzie/ pink ...what a character and he is growing well past the 5’ mark now...only bit me when he missed the prey item...didn’t hurt at all...just pin pricks. had to wait a few seconds for him to let go.

Let me go get some photos loaded ...I am very impressed with this snake, loads of fun , don’t try to mess with him when he is eating ....LOL, like a dog with a a bad attitude he thinks you are trying to take his meal away....
